shirley NY - july 11, 2003

The LISBT resumed this past friday night as 75 bowlers competed in stop #7 of the summer tour of long island. nearly $2300.00 was paid out in the form of either scholarship funds for junior bowlers or cash prizes for adults. of the 4 champions crowned at shirley bowl, 3 are first time winners of the LISBT. the 4th champion won for the second consecutive week.

Here we go.....

At the conclusion of game 3 in the junior handicap division this past Friday night, there were 5 bowlers in the hunt for the final two spots that would advance to the final rounds. The 5 bowlers vying for spots were Dominic Giordani, Shirley in the #3 spot with 719 w/handicap. Louis Giordani, shirley was in the 4th spot at 712. 3 bowlers, Robert Matz, coram, Andrew d’angelo, coram and matt komorowski, mastic beach were all tied for the 5th spot at 708. At the conclusion of game #4, only Louis Giordani would survive the cut. Giordani rolled a 190/259 w/handicap and improved his position from 4th to 2nd.

One bowler not even mentioned as a possible finalist actually became a finalist on the strength of an overwhelming performance in game 4. Jimmy kavanaugh, ridge, rolled a 234 scratch. With his handicap his last game totaled 304. Kavanaugh jumped 7 bowlers and literally snuck his way into the finals all the way from the 11th spot after 3! With his handicap, kavanaugh finished at 954 which was 3 pins better than D’angelo who finished at 951. Kavanaugh would join Giodani in the finals. Also advancing to the finals were #1 seed TJ Zanoni, Shirley at 1034 and Ryan Kase, Deer Park at #2 with 960.

In the 3-man shotgun round, Kavanaugh and Kase would turn out to be the bowlers at the end fighting for the trip into the finals. Giordani, with perhaps fatigue setting in, simply ran out of gas in the shotgun game. Kavanaugh and Kase however were putting on a splendid show. Kavanaugh who entered the tournament with an average of 152, was able to continue his momentum from game 4 in qualifying and managed an over average 186 scratch, 256 with handicap. Kase however was starting to “zone in” on the lanes. Kase rolled a very impressive 220 scratch, 284 with handicap and advanced to the finals vs the #1 seed, and waiting in the wings, Zanoni.

In the championship game, Kase looked as though he was on a mission. Zanoni, was game as well. The Shirley youngster was impressive and rolled a 138 scratch that was 27 pins over average. With Handicap, Zanoni finished with a 249. Kase however, was not going to be denied. Kase rolled his second consecutive 220+, 221 to be exact. With handicap, Kase earned his championship with a 285.

And yes, for those wondering, Ryan Kase is the son of 2-time LISBT Champion Frank Kase.

Junior Handicap Division qualifying highlights (200+/800+): Ryan Kase, Deer Park 202, Jimmy Kavanaugh, Ridge 234, Andrew D'Angelo, Coram 206, Robert matz, Coram 213, Dominic Giordani, Shirley 209, Paul Nevadomski, North Babylon 226, Andrew maglione, Bayport 227 and JJ Komanski, Plainview 211.

--------------------

for all that louis dalessio, sound beach had accomplished this past friday night in the junior scratch division, the difference of winning the tournament or not came down to one single shot in the championship game, in frame 11, vs doug feldman, copiague

dalessio was simply brilliant to say the least. he opened up the tournament with a 280 and finished in the top spot for the 4-game qualifier with a very impressive 951 (237.75). feldman on the other hand was having a good night for himself as well. feldman, seeking his second straight lISBT championship in the junior scratch division rolled his way to the 2nd spot after 4 with an 871 (217.75). in the 3rd and final spot and on his way to the semifinals was michael levine, dix hills at 855 (213.75). Finishing 4th but not advancing was pete smith, brentwood 840 (210.00).

in the semifinal game, feldman got off to a quick start and never looked back. he defeated levine 265-150 to advance to this second straight finals on the LISBT.

The championship game vs dalessio was a great one. the two junior bowlers literally went head to head and ball for ball. feldman, finishing first, once again rose to the occasion in the final rounds just like he had done two weeks ago at smithtown. feldman finished the championship game with a 224. however, feldman did not leave dalessio hanging out to dry. dalessio would win the match with 2 strikes in the 10th along with 2 pins on his fill ball. clearly, it was a position dalessio wanted to be in. the championship was all there in front of him.

dalessio's first shot flushed the pocket. one down, one to go. with the crowd of supporters for both bowlers anxiously awaiting for his second shot, dalessio stepped up on the approach. if there was any fear or anxiety in dalessio, he sure as heck didnt show it. not in the way he looked and not in the way he delivered the ball. dalessio's 11th shot entered the pocket as flush as a ball can enter a pocket. the results however indicated perhaps he could have placed the ball in a better spot. dalessio, as they say in this sport all too many times, "Rang the dime". solid 10-pin. game, match over. doug feldman was taking home his second straight championship.

we have been reporting all summer about the one-hit short club. and perhaps dalessio did come up one hit short if you look at the final results and how they were accomplished. however, give doug feldman credit. all summer long on the LISBT, while certain bowlers are coming up one hit short, it is bowlers like doug feldman that are getting the one extra hit. it doesn't say anywhere in a book "How" to get them. it just says "Get" them.  For Feldman and the period of the last two LISBT events, he has got them when he needed them the most.

that is how champions are made.

Junior Scratch Division qualifying Highlights (200+/800+): Louis Dalessio, Sound Beach 280/951, Doug Feldman, Copiague 277/871, Michael Levine, Dix Hills 275/855, Pete Smith, Brentwood 237/840, Derek Vandervoort, Shirley 223/829, Anthony Desaro, Port Jefferson Station 240/819, RJ Gocinski, Coram 236, Billy Shannon, Commack 221, Cheryl Drusin, Holbrook 234, Nicholas Windschuh, Ronkonkoma 242, Phil Demeri, West Babylon 211, Aaron Platt, Ronkonkoma 234 and Matt Kingsepp, Miller Place 223.

Usually, the first thing you will hear from some competitors about tournaments that have “handicap” divisions, is that “you cant beat those low average bowlers. I have to shoot my brains out just to even come close!”

Well, this past Friday Night, there HAD to be a lot of head scratching going on for sure in the Adult Handicap Division. And the bowlers that do go out of the way to NOT bowl in handicap tournaments should take note of the results from this past tournament.

Need a stat or two? Thanks for asking. Lets insert some stats here why dont we?!

Of the 29 competitors in the handicap field this past Friday night, 9 of them were over average for the 4-game qualifier. Need another stat? You think you need to bowl “Way Over Average” to compete and cash? Of the 7 bowlers that cashed this past Friday night, Joey Thongpoon, Shirley took home a “check” by bowling a whopping 8 pins over average for the night! 8 pins is not even full mark! 8 pins! In fact, Ed Vandervoort, Moriches was the final shotgun entry and he was 9 pins over average for the night!

Now of course, we are having some fun with numbers. But you know the saying…”On any given night….”

Michael Deluca, Shirley however was simply awesome this past Friday night. Deluca averaged 208.25 scratch for the 4-game qualifier and distanced himself from the pack with a 1033 w/hdcp. Ron Cammarata, Sayville was second at 962. Mike Buckley, Coram  was third at 947 while Vandervoort was 4th at 940. Just missing the cut but cashing was Thongpoon at 939, Theresa Castellano, Centereach 938 and Lee Hoffman, East Northport 938. Cammarata, Buckley and Vandervoort to the shotgun while Deluca gets the bye.

As was the case all night long in the adult handicap division, low scores would dominate the shotgun. All 3 bowlers would finish the game under average. Cammarata however managed to survive the “slugfest” by rolling a 179/229 w/hdcp. Vandervoort was one hit short with a 176/221 while buckley came in at 144/207. Cammarata to the “Big Dance” vs Deluca.

Somewhere along the way into the finals, it may have dawned on cammarata that perhaps with the way deluca had performed in the 4-game qualifier, it would have served himself some good if he rolled a high game and at least make deluca earn his pay for the night. Cammarata came through in a big way. The very easy speaking and polite gentleman from Sayville managed a 242 scratch. With handicap, Cammarata was at 283. Deluca in the meantime, never seemed to get going in the championship game. Deluca made an attempt midway in the game to get back into it, however, and open 7th frame ended any chance he would have to earn a title. Deluca finished with a 164/214. Cammarata won for the very first time on the LISBT.

Cammarata looked stunned after the match. When handed his $200.00 earnings for the night, the man from Sayville very quietly said “Ive never won anything like this before. This is the first time. Never”. He honestly looked dazed to say the least. Delecua on the other hand was gracious. Afterall, Deluca had earned $150.00 for the night as well and really didn’t need to feel bad at all. “I had a great time here tonight. This was truly a fun tournament”. Deluca then extended his hand to Cammarata and the two shook hands. “Great Job guy, great job”. We still don’t know whether or not Ron Cammarata had come down from the cloud 9 he was on. Our best guess it was sometime Sunday afternoon. We will make sure he finds out about Deluca’s good sportsmanship the next time we see him.

Moments like these is why we do this.  You just cant make this stuff up. You cant.

Adult handicap Division qualifying Highlights (225+/825+): Michael Deluca, Shirley 244/833, Ed Vandervoort, Moriches 254, Theresa Castellano, Centereach 227, Ed Walsh, Ronkonkoma 265/844, Cathy Buckley, Farmingville 236 and Joe romanski, Coram 232

--------------------

Pete Bohleber, Miller Place is starting to feel as though second place is his destiny. “I am the Walter Ray Williams of A2Z Bohleber says laughing. To be honest, Bohleber may have a point. Bohleber has finished as the runner-up 3 times this year alone. And that is not to mention the few times he has accomplished the feat in the past 2 years on the LISBT.

Bohleber did everything he could this past Friday Night for the 4-game qualifier to put himself in the best possible position to qualify first, get the bye and roll one game to earn a title in the adult scratch division. He opened the night with a 279 and he finished the 4-game set with a 256. There was not anything in between that caused him harm either. He rolled a 237 in game 2 and a 223 in game 3. Bohlebers 995 even earned him the 7th highest 4-game scratch series on the LISBT/A2Z tour, dating back 3 years.

Equally as impressive was Kevin Sosnicki, Shirley at 985 (11th all time high). Sosnicki rolled games in succession of 233,237,256 and 256 earning himself the #2 seed. Rounding out the top 4 for the shotgun was 2-time LISBT Champion Frank Kase, deer park gunning for his 3rd consecutive title at 929 and Fred Ferreira, Kings Point at 885. Falling just short of advancing to the finals was Kevin Rabich, Ridge 876, Bruce Nielsen, Levittown, 876, Tom Coraci, Mastic 875 and Bob Feldman, Copiague 873. Sosnicki, Kase and Ferreira would advance to the shotgun while Bohleber would sit and wait for his opponent.

The shotgun round in this division was a good one. Ferriera was awesome but was eliminated even with a 233. Kase did everything he could do, however, Kase fell to the “One hit short” gremlin by leaving a Stone 9 late in the match that cost him 21 pins in wood. Kase would exit the tournament with a 236. Sosnicki was the one left standing as he powered his way to the championship game with a 267. Bohleber needed now to defeat Sosnicki to gain his first title of 2003.

Sosnicki was not in a sympathetic mood.

Sosnicki rolled strikes, early, often and late while Bohleber seemed to have lost his edge while sitting out the earlier game. Sosnicki smothered Bohleber in the championship game 237-172 taking home top honors.

Bohleber, however bad he felt or even if he wanted to feel bad for himself needs not to worry. Bohleber was absolutely correct when he compared himself to Walter Ray Williams and his “knack” for finishing second. Bohleber also needs to be reminded while Walter Ray certainly did have his share of “bridesmaid” titles, Williams is also noted for winning 37 titles on the PBA tour. In fact, Williams is considered to be one of, if not THE greatest bowler of all time.

In a way, with the amount of “second” places that Bohleber has finished on the A2Z, even with the amount of finals he has made, one could make a case for Bohleber being one of the most successful scratch bowlers in the 2+ years of the LISBT/A2Z bowling club. Whether he is or is not, one thing is for certain. You will know if Pete Bohleber is in the house for an A2Z. All you need to do is look at the standing sheet. He is up there somewhere. Certainly seems that way.

Adult Scratch Division qualifying Highlights (250+/850+): Pete Bohleber, Miller Place 279/995, Kevin Sosnicki, Shirley 256/985, frank kase, deer park 268/929, fred ferreira, kings point 268/885, kevin rabich, ridge 876, bruce nielsen, levittown 876, tom coraci, mastic 252/875, vincent grzan , medford 859, bob feldman, copiague 857, brian westrich, selden 850 and jason alexander, mastic beach 258.
