westhampton nY, July 18, 2003
a field of 45 brave bowlers dealt with the late starting time and some very heavy downpours within 45 minutes of the starting time of 9:PM this past friday night at westhampton bowl. and for the second consecutive week, a junior bowler won for the second straight time. In addition, one of the regular bowlers on the lISBT finally took home the gold in the adult handicap division!
Ryan Kase, Deer Park is making a name for himself. The young and talented young man won for the second consecutive week on the LISBT this past Friday at Westhampton. For the second consecutive week, Kase also had to avoid being eliminated in the semi-final game. However, the final rounds seem to be just what the doctor ordered for him. Kase seems to rise to the occasion when the limelight shines upon him. Kase defeated Nick Sullivan, west Babylon in the semifinal game 231-220. In the championship game, Kase defeated Andrew maglione, bayport 234-199.
With the victory, Kase joins an elite group of bowlers that have won consecutive titles on the LISBT this year. Winning back to back titles include Mike Wodzinski (3 in a row), Doug Feldman, Corey Hirt and Frank Kase, Ryan’s dad. The younger Kase certainly deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence with those fantastic bowlers. His back to back titles speak volumes. next week at shirley, kase has the chance to go for #3 in the place where it all started to begin with. We shall see what we shall see.
Junior Handicap Division qualifying highlights (200+/800+): Andrew Maglione, Bayport 216
--------------------
Jerome Dietz, mastic, bowling in his first ever junior scratch event on the LISBT simply did a wonderful job this past friday night. Dietz rolled games of 216 and 256 in games 3 and 4 to jump himself into the lead at the conclusion of the 4-game qualifier. qualifying second was pete smith, brentwood at 751 and derek vandervoort, moriches was in third at 744.
In the semifinal game, Smith looked as though he was ready to win a tournament while Vandervoort simply could not gain any momentum for himself. Smith won the match 213-177 setting himself up for the championship game vs Dietz.
Pete Smith has been competing on the LISBT for the last 3 years. Not only does Smith have a LISBT title to his credit, Smith also is the owner of some very impressive individual statistics on the LISBT. In fact, Smith has the high 4-game block scratch in the history of the LISBT for both Adults and Juniors with a 1031 rolled at Sayville July 19, 2002! In addition, Smith is the only bowler on the LISBT ever to roll an 800 series for the front 3 games. His 806 scratch was accomplished on the same evening as his record setting 4-game set mentioned above.
In the championship game, Smith gained early momentum as Dietz stayed clean to keep himself in the match. Trouble however found Dietz in frame 6. Dietz opened and the floodgate appeared to have opened with it. Dietz maintained his composure and was able to mark through the 9th frame. Smith however was clearly in the drivers seat…… Until…...
Smith failed to convert a 1-pin spare in the 9th frame and left the door wide open for Dietz in the 10th frame. 2 strikes by Dietz in the 10th frame, and Dietz would go home with a championship. Dietz threw the first strike he needed in the 10th but was not able to throw strike #2 (Add Dietz to the One Hit Short Club. See prior web pages for that!). Smith won the match, and the title 196-193.
Friday night however was most likely a bigger stepping stone for Dietz then it was for Smith. While Smith has established himself as a major scratch player on Long Island for Youth Bowling, Dietz established the fact that he belonged in the elite group. Dietz will now take the same road that all the great young scratch bowlers have taken along the way. If Dietz can accept the fact that there will be bumps along the way and also accept the fact that bowling with the “big boys and girls” wont be easy, then Jerome Dietz can accomplish whatever Jerome Dietz wants to accomplish. Talent is not an issue because the young man obviously has the talent that is needed to succeed. As long as he has the patience and desire to be the best, at the end of the story, there always is a happy ending. Always.
Junior Scratch Division qualifying Highlights (200+/800+): Jerome Dietz, mastic 256/823, Pete Smith, Brentwood 213, Michael Graham, Easthampton 207, Corey Hirt, Mastic Beach 206, Ed Barton, East Moriches 210
--------------------
for the second consecutive week, It wasnt as though there was anything spectacular happening this past Friday night in the adult handicap division. what was happening though was the difficulties some bowlers had just maintaining average. with averages based on 230 for handicap purposes, examine the leader numbers after 3 games based on 690 that includes handicap. Jim Luke, Miller Place was the co-leader at 705 along with Ed Vandervoort, Moriches. In 3rd was Vinnie Zambito, shirley at 686 and in 4th was Ron Cammarata, sayville at 684. As stated on last week's recap, you do not neccesaraly have to bowl King Kong type numbers to compete in the handicap divsision. In fact, if you are slightly above or at your average for the first 3 games, in most cases, you will have a shot to advance into the finals with a respectable 4th game. And that is what transpired this past Friday night.
Benny wong, port jeff station, went from 5th to the leader spot after bowling 26 pins over average with a 189 scratch giving him a 930 w/handicap. steven goucher, hampton bays pulled off just about the same trick wong did. goucher went from 6th to 2nd after rolling a 222 scratch (35 over average) in game 4 as well giving him a total of 926. Luke tied for 2nd even though he rolled a sub-par game 4 of 171 and finished with a 926. In the 4th and final spot for the shotgun round, Ed vandervoort rolled a 194 that was 12 pins below his entering average giving him a 920. In fact, Ron Cammarata rolled a 199 his last game but fell one pin short of the cut at 919. Oh those spares!
In the shotgun round the difficulties continued. Luke would be the one left standing at the end. Luke finished with handicap at 229 while goucher finished with a 214 and vandervoort would come in at 202. Luke goes to the finals vs Wong.
For wong, it was his first trip into the finals since July 13, 2001 at County Line, almost two years to the day. On that day, wong lost the championship match to fabrizio cerutti of levittown. two years later, wong would turn the table and finally sip the Champaign! Wong went on to defeat Luke 205-203 to win his first ever LISBT Championship. Perhaps Junior Bowler Jerome Dietz can learn a little about Benny Wong and having the patience to win as mentioned above.
Like I said, the story always has a happy ending. And for Benny Wong, Friday July 18, 2003 will go down as one of those stories that ended the way he always wanted it to end.
Adult handicap Division qualifying Highlights (225+/825+): Ed Vandervoort, Moriches 245/836
--------------------
Tom Coraci, Shirley this past Friday Night was trying to become the first bowler ever to win a championship on the LISBT as an adult and as a junior bowler.
Coraci in 2001 won 3 championships in the Junior Scratch Division on the LISBT. two years later and bowling in the adult scratch division, Coraci put himself in the best possible position this past Friday night as he led the pack in the 4-game qualifier with a very impressive 926 series, highlighted by an opening game of 278. Qualifying second was Pete Bohleber, Miller Place at 898. Matt Cabble, Miller Place was in third at 896. Surviving the cut and finishing 4th was LISBT Champion (Babylon) Scott Teitler, patchogue at 849.
While Coraci waited in the wings, Matt Cabble decided it was time to take things under control. By the time Cabble had finished in the 10th frame of the shotgun round, there wasn’t anything Teitler or Bohleber could do to gain entry into the championship game vs Coraci. Cabble, 205 had enough wood to defeat the dynamic duo of Teitler 203 and Bohleber 182.
Coraci started the championship match in very fine fashion by rolling a strike in frame 1. Cabble started the championship match in very fine fashion by also rolling a strike in frame 1…and in frame 2…. And in frame 3….. and in frame 4….. and in frame 5….. and in frame 6….. and in frame 7….. and in frame 8….. and in frame 9. While Cabble was throwing bomb after bomb, Coraci…well….wasn’t. Coraci was the victim of one bad break after another. By frame 7, Coraci knew that tonight was not going to be the night he was going to take home the Adult Scratch Division Championship. The one thing though about Tom Coraci, is the young man doesn’t wave the towel and gives respect to the game and to his competitor. He is there until it says he is through with 10 frames. Coraci very gallantly and professionally finished the game while at the same time was rooting for Cabble to get the 300 game if he could.
Matt Cabble was three strikes away from collecting an additional $232.00 that was available to him if he could bowl a 300 game. The progressive pot for a 300 game in the adult division has not been hit since Christine Anania rolled a gem at Westbury May 23. Considering the amount of bowlers that have bowled on the LISBT this summer along with the talent that has bowled on the LISBT this summer, to have a progressive jackpot that large is unusual.
The 300 pot lives another week. $264.00 to be exact for next week at Shirley.
Cabble just did not come out of the ball cleanly on his first shot in the 10th and the ball sailed high into the pocket. Cabble in fact wound up opening in the 10th, however, the match was well over by then. Cabble wins, 265-169.
For Cabble, the victory was nice. Cabble has had what seems to be an endless amount near misses while bowling LISBT’s during the past two plus years. For once, he was able to leave a bowling center without having to relive one or two shots that cost him for the night.
On the other hand…. You do know that if he carries the first strike in the 10th….. and then if he gets the 11th strike...and if......
:o)
