smithtown nY, august 1, 2003
The LISBT visited smithtown bowl this past friday night. 83 bowlers participated in the event that paid out exactly $2600.00 in collective prize money for adults and scholarship dollars for juniors! 2 bowlers won a LISBT crown for the first time ever and two bowlers won for the second week in a row!
ready to rock-n-roll? Lets do it!
The junior handicap division had some incredible scores and also supplied us with the nights most exciting moment. More on the latter in a bit.
Chris kieser, northport picked up exactly the same way he left off a few weeks ago when the LISBT visited smithtown for the first time on july 11. it was on that night that kieser won the junior handicap division by defeating matt kingsepp, ridge. Kieser, entering the tournament with a 171 average this past Friday night rolled games of 195, 205, 196 and 226 scratch. Factor in his handicap and his total for the 4-game qualifier came to a very impressive 1034. the 1034 proved to be just enough as Daniel charbonnier, Farmingville was just as impressive. Charbonnier, entering the tournament at 172 rolled scratch games of 188,219,219 and 197. with handicap his total came to 1025. rounding out the top 4 and joining charbonnier and kieser in the finals were lyle hoffman, east northport, making his second consecutive trip into the finals at 996 and tara mazur, northport at 982. missing by just 9 pins was timothy burns, coram at 973. Jessica allen, bellmore 966 and eddie gocinski, coram 964 also had impressive scores for the evening.
The shotgun game was certainly a “doozey” as we will call it. Charbonnier, mazur and hoffman put on quite a show. While this certainly was the junior handicap division, the scores tell us that perhaps these individuals were competing out of division. Charbonnier rolled a 246 scratch, while mazur rolled a 235 while hoffman rolled a 200. with handicap figured in, charbonnier would edge both bowlers 298 to 273 to 254 respectively in the same order. Charbonnier and kierser to the finals.
The finals match turned out to be a close one as well. However, this time the scores were not as high. Kieser and charbonnier were close the entire game and both bowlers had opportunities to close out the other. It wasn’t until late in the game that charbonnier finished off kieser for good. Charbonnier earned his first championship on the lisbt by outscoring kieser 230-214.
As mentioned earlier, the highlight of the entire tournament came courtesy of RJ gocinski, coram. Gocinski who rolls in every LISBT tournament, thrilled the crowd in game 3 of the qualifying round. By the time gocinski had stepped up onto the approach for his first shot in frame 10 of game 3, there were many people gathered right behind lanes 13 & 14. gocinski had the first 9 strikes. Gocinski had the opportunity to roll his first ever 300 game in his young career. As a bonus, gocinski would earn at the minimum a share of the 300 game fund for juniors that roll a 300 game. The fund was at $197.00. Gocinski nailed his first shot in the 10th and the crowd cheered and encouraged him on. His second shot in the 10th finished a little weak, however, the shot entered the 1-3 pocket. Result? 10-pin left standing. The supporters looking on gave gocinski a warm round of applause for his effort. Gocinski then covered the 10-pin and finished the game with a 289. the 289 scratch is the new high single game mark for the junior handicap division on the lisbt.
Junior Handicap Division qualifying highlights (200+/800+): Chris Kieser, northport 226/822, daniel charbonnier, farmingville 219/817, lyle hoffman, east northport 232, tara mazur, northport 222/830, timothy burns, coram 227, jessican allen, bellmore 223, eddie gocinski, coram 203, RJ Gocinski, coram 289/823, JJ Romanski, plainview 211 and ryan kase, deer park 200
--------------------
In the junior scratch division, it wasn’t as though Mark Marra, East Islip had bowled himself out of the tournament at the conclusion of game 1. Afterall, Marra shot a respectable 217 to open things up. However, he also found himself in 7th place. If he was going to advance to the final rounds, he was going to have to step it up. Boy did he ever!
Marra rolled an outstanding 774 back 3 powered by games of 263, 256 and 255. By doing so, Marra had separated himself from the rest of the field and led the division with a 991 scratch for 4. The 991 is 3rd in the all time high LISBT record books for the junior scratch division.
Placing second, and once again advancing to the final rounds was jack castellano, centereach at 956. Castellano rolled a 279 his opening game. In third stood david ryan, selden and mike wodzinkski, east meadow at 917. Just missing the cut was Pete Smith, brentwood at 892. Smith rolled a 278 in game 4. Castellano, Ryan and Wodzinski advance to the shotgun round while Marra drew the first round bye.
In what has seemed to be a forever matchup of young talent in this division with castellano and wodzinski matching up several times during the summer, it was ryan who would get between both these bowlers. Literally. Ryan rolled a very impressive 224 in the shotgun round while castellano never got going and struggled to a 159. Keep in mind though, when you are caught between something, that can only mean there is something surrounding you on both sides. While castellano was on one side of ryan , on the other side Ryan and on the RIGHT side was Mike Wodzkinski. Wodzinski once again showing grit determination threw strikes early and often and went on to defeat ryan and castellano by rolling a 257. That set up the championship game vs Marra. Nassau vs Suffolk.
The championship game was a great one. Both bowlers throwing strikes and both bowlers marking for spares when needed. Wodzinski however was rolling one extra strike in the process and took what seemed to be control of the match. However, Marra wasn’t going quietly. Marra would throw strikes in frames 9,10,11 and 12 to finish with a 227. Wodzinski needed to throw count on his first shot in the 10th to close Marra out. Wodzinski not only threw count, he threw strikes on his first two shots in the 10th and won the match 256-227. For Wodzinski, it was his 5th title on the LISBT of 2003 and 2nd straight. And just like another mike we all know, Jordon that is, our Mike got “One for the thumb” in significance of his title.
Mark Marra left everything he had on the lanes at Smithtown. But so did Mike Wodzinski. Nassau wins. again.
Junior Scratch Division qualifying Highlights (200+/800+): mark marra, east islip 263/991, jack castellano, centereach 279/956, david ryan, selden 257/917, mike wodzinski, east meadow 244/917, pete smith, brentwood 278/892, jerome dietz, mastic 245/864, scott reed, smithtown 255/858, chris anderson, east islip 237/855, noel ocasio, patchogue 235/850, tony desara, port jeff, 266/802, michael levine, dix hills 230/800, AJ Fragola, east patchogue 246, derek vandervoort, moriches 215 and ryan coccia, smithtown 200

At the conclusion of game 4 in the adult handicap division, the bowlers that were in the top 4 spots after the third game were the bowlers that advanced into the finals. The only difference was the changing of places. Joe prozor, Lindenhurst, 2nd after 3 moved into 1st after the 4th game in qualifying with a 1031 with handicap. Prozor earned the 1st round bye in the shotgun. Vincent gioe, smithtown, 1st after 3 moved down a notch to 2nd with a 1005. ron cammarata, Sayville went from 4th after 3 in to the 3rd spot with 977 and Theresa castellano, centereach 3rd after 3 rounded out the top 4 by finishing 4th with a 976. just missing the cut but still cashing in the event were Karen annunziata, ridge at 966, gary lindahl, ridge at 965 and mary maglione, bayport at 965.
The shotgun game turned into a one man wrecking crew. Both castellano 197 and cammarata 190 had unlucky breaks and never really had much of a chance. Gioe on the other hand was hitting on all cylinders. Gioe rolled a 248 w/hdcp (226 scratch) and moved into the championship game vs prozor.
The championship game was very entertaining. Both prozor and gioe were outstanding and both threw quality shots throughout. Prozor however had built a slight lead in the middle rounds and never relinquished the lead after that. Gioe was tough till the end and rolled a 232 w/handicap to finish things off. However, when just prior to the machines being turned off for the night, prozor had accumulated a 252 w/handicap, thus giving the gentleman from Lindenhurst his first ever LISBT title. Prozor earned $225.00 for his effort while Gioe took home a cool $150.00!
Adult handicap Division qualifying Highlights (225+/825+): Joe prozor, lindenhurst, 234/883, vincent gioe, smithtown 252/917, ron cammarata, sayville 237/849, theresa castellano, centereach 246, gary lindahl, ridge 244/833, mark mccartney, brooklyn 232, gail brunner, baiting hallow 226, warren newman, commack 244 and katie lamac, westbury 246
--------------------
Sometimes things are so good the first time around that we make a return trip just to enjoy things a whole lot more then we did the first time. Sometimes that is. Not always. Kevin sosnicki, shirley found that out this past friday night.
4 bowlers in the adult scratch division were over 700 this past Friday night for the first 3 games. 3 of those bowlers were separated by a total of 4 pins. In first after 3 was pete bohleber, miller place at 721. in second was paul molnar, Commack at 719 and in third was sosnicki at 717. brad ross, st james was sitting in the fourth spot at 705. all 4 bowlers had tremendous 4th games. Bohleber would lock up the top seed and draw the first round bye in the finals by rolling a 267 in game 4 and finishing the qualifier with a 988. sosnicki did his part and squeaked into 2nd with a 257/974. molnar in the meantime rolled a 252 in game 4 and incredibly as it seems fell into third with a 971. ross on the other hand, not in his wildest dreams could have imagined what was in store for him. Ross rolled a clutch 247 in game 4 to give him a total of 952 that seemed to be enough for him to make the finals. John scarpulla, smithtown thought otherwise. Scarpulla entering game 4 trailing the 4th spot by 31 pins rolled a 289 in game 4 and leapfrogged himself into the 4th spot at 963, 11 pins ahead of ross. Talk about timing. Sosnicki, molnar and scarpulla to the shotgun. One could easily understand if Ross went to the shotglass.
The shotgun game turned into the “lord giveth, the lord taketh”. Entering the 10th frame, scarpulla was clearly in the drivers seat. With molnar already fininished at 214, scarpulla could finish off sosnicki regardless of whatever pincount sosnicki could get in the 10th. Two strikes and count for scarpulla in the 10th would give him a 247. sosnicki could strike till the cows come home in the 10th frame for all scarpulla cared. the best sosnicki could do was 245. well, sosnicki did strike but the cows stayed out and partied instead. The lefty scarpulla ran into a 7-9 on his first ball in the 10th. Scarpulla finished with a 213. call it sudden victory or sudden death. whatever choice of words you use only meant sosnicki and bohleber to the finals. this would be a repeat performance from Shirley on july 11, 2003.
On july 11, sosnicki went on to defeat bohleber in the championship game rather easily, 237-172. And even though sosnicki and bohleber appear to be friends off the lanes, the fire and intensity these two guys bring to the lanes is just one reason why neither bowler would want to go down to defeat last friday night. this is certainly not a "you got me now you owe me one" deal. not with these two. on the other hand, pete bohleber was now gunning for title #2 in a row. that seems to be enough incentive just by itself.
as the championship game progressed into the middle frames, sosnicki was obviously running out of gas for the night. now bowling in his 6th game of the tournament, sosnicki was having trouble getting the ball out onto the lane and wound up paying for those shots. bohleber on the other hand had the benefit of sitting out a game and perhaps it was there he saved some energy. bohleber experienced no problems from the beginning and went on to defeat sosnicki, 230-193 earning his second consecutive title on the LISBT in 2003.
and the rest they say is history.
