sayville nY, august 8, 2003

The LISBT visited sayville bowl this past friday night. a record 118 bowlers participated in the event that paid out over $3600.00 in collective prize money for adults and scholarship dollars for juniors! Why waste anymore time....lets go to the videotape Replay! Uh... hmmmm..... Well, no replay...but please do read!

The junior handicap division supplied the LISBT with the most noise this past Friday night. All night long, loud clasps of “THUNDER” could be heard coming from the direction of lanes 31 and 32 of Sayville bowl. The inclimate weather was courtesy of Darren “Thunder” Andretta, rocky point.

Andretta, a/k/a “Thunder” for those that know him, was certainly a storm that was brewing this past Friday. Andretta opened the night with a 226 scratch and with his handicap led the field after the first game with a 285. although andretta fell to second after game two, he quickly regrouped and finished first for the evening in the 4-game qualifier with a 1015 with handicap. Equally impressive as andretta was THE prettiest finalist in the tournament in Karen Girolamo, Shirley at 999. coming back all the way from the 9th seed after three games and finishing 3rd for the qualifying round was ryan kane, Ronkonkoma also at 999. Kane managed a very impressive 223 scratch in game 4 and made life miserable for a few bowlers who failed to make the cut by a few pins. Finishing 4th and having just an outstanding night was matt kingsepp, miller place. Kingsepp had the high scratch series for the handicap bowlers as he rolled an 854 scratch. With handicap, kingsepp finished at 998. bringing home scholarship money but not advancing to the finals was aaron ryan, selden at 991.

The shotgun round for this division was the division that produced the most energetic and perhaps the most excitement for the night. Girolamo, kane and kingsepp had a match for the ages with all 3 bowlers showing no signs of nerves or anxiety. Girolamo finished the shotgun with a 216. however, it wasn’t enough. kane and kingsepp were engaged in a battle to the end with both bowlers throwing high games and playing what seemed to be for keeps. Kingsepp managed to get that one extra pin he needed and went on to defeat kane 240-239 to girolamo’s 216. kingsepp to the finals vs andretta.

Andretta and kingsepp went on to have a fantastic game. Both bowlers had plenty of support from behind the lanes. Kingsepp’ dad, john, who cashed in the adult handicap tournament was cheering his son on as was andretta’s dad, Bob andretta. Both bowlers and families seemed to be having a great time. Keep in mind however, both andretta and kingsepp have a strong desire to win and neither bowler was going to go down quietly. And neither did. Kingsepp was just fantastic as he rolled a 219 scratch that equaled out to 255 with handicap. Andretta on the other hand was just as impressive. Andretta covered a solid 7-pin on his first shot in the 10th of the championship game and went on to roll a 208 scratch that resulted in a 267 with handicap. Both bowlers deserve a lot of credit for their performance and both earned great scholarship money towards future education. Andretta pocketed $150.00 for the night while Kingsepp pocket $124.00 for the night that included brackets. Like we have been saying all along. It all works out at the end.

One last thing about Andretta. We are just wondering….when Darren was learning the ropes about bowling and rolling with the help of no gutters… was he known as a “Lil ThunderBumper”?

:o)

Junior Handicap Division qualifying highlights (200+/800+): Darren Andretta, rocky point 226, ryan kane, ronkonkoma 223, karen girolamo, shirley 203, matt kingsepp, miller place 240/854, aaron ryan, selden 214, joshua roca, bellrose 215, jim kavanaugh, ridge 205, RJ Gocinski, coram 232/820, andrew maglione, bayport 206, ed gocinski, coram 202, dominic giordani, shirley 234, krystal olivieri, islip terrace 226 and daniel charbonnier, farmingville 225.

--------------------

In the junior scratch division this past Friday night, you could literally feel the “thrill of victory” and the “agony of defeat” in the air as the final cuts were announced after qualifying. Louis dalessio, sound beach had things pretty much in control as he led the group after 4 games with a 927. dalessio however didn’t make things easy for himself. The talented young man found himself all alone in 20th place after his opening game of 184. in fact, dalessio trailed the leader scott reed (269), smithtown by 85 pins! From that point on, dalessio took things under control in a big way. Dalessio rolled games of 255,266 and 222 his final 3 games (743) and climbed his way to the top spot. Trailing dalessio by just 15 pins and enjoying a fine night was corey hirt, mastic beach at 912. Hirt also rolled a 700+ back 3 with games of 243,217 and 245 (705). In the third spot was gary haines, west Babylon at 890. the final spot available to the finals however was thisclose. 1 spot, 4 bowlers vying for it. When the 4th and final spot was announced at 872 for jack castellano, centereach, you could here the “yeah baby” and the “oh god, are you kidding me, cmon!” all at once. Trailing castellano by one pin and getting shut out of the finals was Michael yamond, east northport at 871. trailing castellano by two pins was david sulzer, bohemia at 870. and trailing castellano by 8 pins was noel ocasio, Patchogue at 264. the irony of the last game in qualifying was that castellano was the only bowler of the 4 that did not roll a 200+ game. Castellano came in at 188 in game 4, while Yamond (202), sulzer (226) and ocasio (264) all were on the plus side. I guess you could say it is better to be chased then to do the chasing. I guess you could also say it is not a good idea to throw away pins on first shots.

The shotgun game between castellano, haines and hirt turned into a one shot affair. Castellano could not turn his one pin good fortune into any momentum in the elimination round and struggled to a 148. haines and hirt however were engaged in a good battle. At the end however, hirt had just enough to defeat haines, 211-202 to gain entry into the finals vs dalessio.

The championship game of dalessio vs hirt was a good battle. Both bowlers have been involved in similar situations this year alone on the LISBT 2003. Hirt in fact, has won two times in the junior handicap division by taking the titles at Babylon May 23 and at Westbury on May 30. Dalessio has been involved with 3 finals himself this summer and is a past champion on the LISBT capturing a title at Sayville in 2002. You could call both bowlers seasoned veterans. On this night however, dalessio would finish off hirt late in the game and go on to win the championship by the score of 200-188.

While dalessio and hirt were celebrating the thrill of victory for the night after the lanes had been shut down for the evening…. Yamond, sulzer and ocasio were still probably playing a few shots for the night over and over and over again in their heads. Oh, the agony of defeat and oh those 10-pins! Ah... thats why we come back..... get em next week....

Junior Scratch Division qualifying Highlights (200+/800+): louis dalessio, sound beach 266/927, corey hirt, mastic beach 245/912, gary haines, west babylon 236/890, jack castellano, centereach 253/872, michael yamond, east northport 257/871, david sulzer, bohemia 227/870, noel ocasio, patchogue 264/864, nicholas windschuh, ronkonkoma 256/850, ed barton, east moriches 226/830, david ryan, selden 222/825, scott reed, smithtown 269/820, william knoth, patchogue 235/809, tom scherrer, holstville 247/807, cheryl drusin, holbrook 237, adam sher, commack 205, pete smith, brentwood 248, chris jove, port jeff 223, amy bohleber, miller place 208, anthony desaro, port jeff station 211, jerome dietz, mastic 217 and derek vandervoort, moriches 214

--------------------

The adult handicap division this past Friday night certainly had some very nice scores. Leading the pack at the conclusion of the 4 game qualifier was lou giordani, Shirley at 1005 with handicap. Giordani who entered the tournament with a 194 average rolled scratch games of 205, 222, 236 and 214 that helped secure his top spot. In the second seed and making his second trip into the final rounds this summer was vinny zambito, Shirley. Zambito used a 245 scratch in game 2 to his advantage and basically kept himself out of trouble the other 3 games and finished with a 986 for the 4 games. In the third spot, one pin back of zambito were two bowlers, Arthur ryan, selden and brian darcy, Patchogue both at 985. missing the cut but having a great night and cashing were LISBT 2003 smithtown Champion Joe Prozor, lindenhurst at 968, dave kuntz, coram 967, robert miller, bohemia 966, bill gocinski, coram 959 and john kingsepp, miller place 948.

In the shotgun round, zambito, ryan and darcy locked up in what was a very interesting but nostalgic semifinal game. Ryan who is new to the LISBT was probably aware that himself, Darcy and Zambito were participating in the semi final round of the largest ever field of bowlers in the history of the LISBT dating back to 2001. what ryan could not have possibly known is the irony involved with it. Both zambito and darcy have been regular bowlers on the LISBT for the last 3 years and in fact, BOTH Zambito and Darcy bowled in the very first tournament ever held on the LISBT on June 8, 2001 at Coram Lanes. Since that time, out of a possible 36 events that the LISBT has had, Zambito was bowling in his 33rd tournament! WOW. Darcy on the other hand, was participating in his 27th tournament! If there was such a thing of poetic justice, it was the fact that both of these gentlemen were now competing, along with Ryan, for the largest 1st place payout the LISBT has had in a given division, at $300.00 for the night. (See KEGLERS KORNER at the bottom of this webpage for more on this particular subject)

The shotgun game turned into an early exit for both Zambito and Ryan. Darcy jumped out of the gate early and basically left both bowlers on the out looking in. darcy finished with a 255 with handicap while ryan would finish 3rd for the night with a 216 and zambito 4th at 202. on to the finals for darcy and the opportunity to win a championship.

Giordani and darcy played cat and mouse in the early going in the finals. each bowler marking and throwing strikes as well. However, by the 7th frame, darcy had taken the match under his control and literally was bowling just for count by the time the 10th frame had started. Giordani finished well and shot a very respectable 240 with handicap. But it wasn’t nearly what he needed as darcy finished with a 279 with handicap and took home the $300.00 first place money. Not all was lost for giordani however. Giordani took home a nice $200.00 for second. Things always work out at the end. And on this historic night for the LISBT, to have two charter members competing for a championship, then it certainly did end the way it was supposed to end. Victorious or not.

Adult handicap Division qualifying Highlights (225+/825+): lou giodani, shirley 236/877, vinnie zambito, shirley 245, joe prozor, lindenhurst 246, robert miller, bohemia 227, bill gocinski, coram 257/851, liz field, mastic beach 249, bob andretta, rocky point 236, jason alexander, mastic beach 232, ron cammarata, sayville 233 and ed vandervoort, moriches 235

--------------------

The action in the adult scratch division this past Friday night was a tale of two divisions. One division consisting of 6 bowlers, the other consisting of 24 bowlers. at the conclusion of game 3 this past Friday night, the leader of the pack, tony corsetti, Sayville had already separated himself from the pack by rolling an opening 770 for three. Spots 2 through 6 however were a different story. the 5 spots were separated by a total of 24 pins. 3 of the bowlers would advance into the shotgun round. In second after 3 was Kevin sosnicki, Shirley at 709. sosnicki was followed in order by george mottern, riverhead 705, Brendan mcgrath, Holbrook 698, matt cabble, miller place 688 and craig lindahl, ridge 685. the next closest bowler to lindahl and in 7th place was scott tietler, Patchogue at 647. game 4 would obviously determine which 3 of the 6 would advance into the final rounds.

Mottern, who was brilliant for the first 3 games put himself into a tough situation in game 4 by rolling only a 195. The other 4 bowlers however put on a show of grit and determination. And as luck would or would not have it, depending on how you look at it, somebody was going to miss out on the finals even though the lowest game rolled by the 4 was a 223. and speaking of 223, welcome to 5th place matt cabble. Mcgrath moved from 4th to second with a 249. sosnicki, moved from 2nd to 3rd in even though he rolled a 233. the biggest jump however was made by lindahl who went from 6th to 4th on the strength of his 238 in the last game. Mcgrath, sosnicki and lindahl to the shotgun. Cabble, mottern and joe haines sr, west Babylon all earned paychecks the night.

The anticipated high scoring shotgun game met all expectations. Lindahl, sosnicki and mcgrath were brilliant. At this level of competition, the ability to throw strikes is what separates the winner and non winner on any given night. And Lindahl was the bowler that was able to throw the longest string of strikes. Lindahl 258 defeated sosnicki 233 and mcgrath 226 to gain entry into the finals vs a rested and able corsetti.

Both lindahl and corsetti are bowlers that are going to attack from all sides. Neither bowler can be considered tentative. In fact, neither one of them knows what tentative means. Certainly not on the lanes. In the championship game, both bowlers did just enough to keep themselves in the match. Perhaps though, the momentum that lindahl had gained going back all the way to game 4 in the qualifiers was exactly what kept him going. Lindahl went on to win championship #2 on the LISBT 2003 (East Islip) by defeating Corsetti 224-217.

Good job by all.

Keglers Korner...........

By topping the 100 mark for the first time in the history of the LISBT, it serves as a reminder to us that the bowlers of Long Island, NY and in some instances as far away as Ohio and New Jersey,  that perhaps we are doing something that is considered OK in the bowling industry. More important though is the bowlers that have been so supportive of our "program" or "tour" as we call it. Steve and I reflect on the very first day we discussed our plans for A2Z way back in late winter early spring 2001. At our very first tournament ever held at Coram Lanes in Coram June 8, 2001, we had a field of 34 bowlers. There were many bowlers from that first tournament that participated in our record holding event last week at Sayville. Those bowlers are in no specific order, Vinny Zambito, Brian Darcy, John Scarpulla, Steve Keuhne (runner), Matt Cabble, Stacey Bokina and AJ Fragola. One bowler not mentioned, Benny Wong, also bowled in that first tournament but was unable to attend last Friday due to a concert that his son gave him tickets for as a birthday present. Benny has bowled in 31 of 36 possible tournaments during the 3 summers. It would be unfair to not include him in that group of bowlers. Besides, I personally, Poppa Z make too much fun of him every night I see him! Right Ben-NEEEEE!

During the past almost 3 years now, A2Z has had a growing list of faithful and devoted bowlers. To even mention a few of those bowlers would be unfair to the ones not mentioned unintentionally. And the suppport keeps on growing. It is truly remarkable how many bowlers look forward to Friday Nights and A2Z in the summer months. And we look forward to it also.

Hey, the first time we went over the 100 mark certainly is something to remember and honor. However, keep in mind, with the last 3 stops being held this summer at East Islip, Garden City and Babylon, the opportunity is there to present itself with more tremendous fields. One thing though to remember, there is NOTHING in this world like the first time for anything.

Sayville Bowl, August 8, 2003 will go down in our memory banks forever. And the bowlers are the ones responsible for it all. And to them, we thank you from the bottom of our heart. We hope for the weeks to come and future years, we can all grow together and come up with the ultimate in bowling tournaments. It will happen. Just watch.

TA-TA-FOR-NOW!

Until Next Time.....

Steve A and Poppa Z! A2Z Bowling! The LISBT!
