East islip nY, august 15, 2003
The LISBT visited east islip lanes this past friday night. a field of 100 bowlers participated in the event that paid out over $3000.00 in collective prize money for adults and scholarship dollars for juniors! 4 first time ever champions of the lISBT were crowned! In addition from the "it aint over till its over" group, one bowler came from eighteenth place after the 3rd game to finish third overall! Just Incredible. As NY METS announcer Bob Murphy would say, "now for the Happy Recap"!.
in the Junior Handicap Division, many impressive scores were rolled this past friday night. 6 bowlers topped the 1000 mark and 14 pins separated spots 4 through 6. oh those spares.
the road to the finals this past friday night went through lyle hoffman, east northport. the young adult was the only competitor in this division to roll 4 games of 200+. hoffman rolled games of 204, 200, 240 and 245 that simply buzzed the rest of the field. with handicap, hoffman stood at 1077 and all alone at the top spot. in second place and having a marvelous night himself was LISBT 2003 Champion robert matz, coram who finished at 1038 with handicap. matz used games 2 and 4 to his advantage as he rolled huge games of 237 and 225 scratch. in third and LISBT 2003 champion was daniel charbonnier, farmingville at 1031. while matz was having fun in games 2 and 4, charbonnier helped his cause in games 1 and 3. charbonnier rolled an opening game scratch of 240 and two games later, threw a ton of strikes that pushed him to a 222. in fourth place and making the biggest impact of the tournament in game 4 was 2-time LISBT 2003 champion ryan kase, deer park. kase picked a good time to roll his high game of the night in game 4 at 219. in doing so, kase jumped from 6th place into the 4th seed. kase needed every pin he needed as well. his 1014 with handicap had no room for error. missing the cut by the narrowest of margins, 1 pin was paul nevadomski, west babylon at 1013. cara nielsen, levittown also had a marvelous night but fell a little short at 1000. hoffman to get the bye while matz, charbonnier and kase go to the shotgun round.
the shotgun game featured Three 2003 LISBT champions in charbonnier, kase and matz. 3 bowlers. 3 champions. 1 will survive. and survive would be the perfect word for kase and matz.
charbonnier in the shotgun game just could not get going and became a non factor midway through the elimination game. for kase and matz, elimination was not an option. these two young competitors literally lit the place up. kase wound up with a 214 scratch giving him a 270. matz on the other hand rolled a 202 scratch. however, with handicap, kase had just enough to edge out matz who finished with a 263 with handicap. kase would be making appearance #4 into the finals on the LISBT 2003. kase would be also seeking title #3. and you know what they say about things coming in 3's.
in the championship game, the two bowlers came out swinging early. both bowlers showing signs of toughness and a desire to win. hoffman however started stringing strikes while kase simply couldnt start the string he needed. hoffman would go on to roll a 241 scratch and with handicap finished at 268. kase however would have to start thinking about championship #3 on another day. while kase finished at 180 scratch, his 236 with handicap left him well short of where he needed to be to take home the title.
for hoffman, the win was his first on the LISBT 2003. it was however his 4th appearance in the finals. the young man from east northport has certainly done a great job this summer. kase has been splendid as well. it certainly sets up the opportunity for a rematch with two tournaments to go this summer. if the schedule allows it, we are certain we will hear from these two competitors sometime soon.
Junior Handicap Division qualifying highlights (200+/800+): lyle hoffman, east northport 245/889, robert matz, coram 237, daniel charbonnier, farmingville 240/835, ryan kase, deer park 219, paul nevadomski, west babylon 225, cara nielsen, levittown 206, ryan wisnewski, east northport 240/822, andrew maglione, bayport 236, timothy burns, coram 214, matt kingsepp, miller place 237, jim kavanaugh, ridge 210, darren andretta, rocky point 208, matt kelly, bayshore 236 and jason cornacchio, mastic 201
--------------------
the junior scratch division put on quite a show this past friday night. leading the pack of bowlers in the 4-game qualifying round was jerome dietz, mastic at 953. dietz who swung over to the junior scratch division midway through this summer from the handicap division was marvelous. the tall and very talented teen rolled games of 221, 247, 240 and 245. qualifying 2nd and making his second trip into the finals this summer was david ryan, selden. ryan opened the night with a 279 that powered his way to a front 3 of 752 and the top spot. ryan however slipped to 191 in game 4 and had to settle for the second seed. however, he was still advancing to the shotgun with his 943. the 3rd and 4th spots advancing into the final rounds would wind up being a slugfest.
at the conclusion of 3 games this past friday, spots 3 through 7 were separated by 53 pins. chris jove, port jeff was third at 663. louis dalessio, sound beach was 4th at 646. william knoth, patchogue was 5th at 641 and corey hirt, mastic beach was 6th at 619. however, when the 7th seed is 5 time 2003 LISBT champion Mike Wodzinski, east meadow, the 4 bowlers ahead of wodzinski better Take care of business or else there is an outstanding chance somebody will be going home ahead of scheduled plans of prolonging the evening. and that is exactly what happened to those bowlers that did not TCB.
Wodzinski did his part by nailing a 246 in game 4. however, 3 of the 4 bowlers ahead of wodzinski entering game 4 did not go plus. in fact, the only bowler of the 4 that DID go plus was knoth. while Wodzinski would lock up the 3 seed after 4 with a total of 856, knoth rolled a 210 in game 4 that helped secure the last spot at 851. just missing the cut was jove at 849 who cashed for scholarship money.
the shotgun game may have showcased a sign of things to come in the future on the LISBT. david ryan was simply brilliant. david ryan has also come out of nowhere on the LISBT. and while he had come out of nowhere, when he has been present, he has been good. Very good. more on that in the next paragraph. ryan rolled a 233 in the shotgun game and watched as knoth and wodzinski took turns leaving tap after tap. wodzinski however was the one who felt the taps the most. two solid 8 pins cost wodzinski a tremendous amount of wood during the match. in fact with those 8 pin taps, knoth wound up finishing 3rd in the tournament by edging out wodzinski 204-203. ryan now was set to go against #1 seed dietz.
the 3 prior tournaments ryan has competed in this summer on the LISBT along with this east islip tournament, the young man from selden has averaged an incredible 226.75. in fact, ryan was paying back wodzinski in a way during the shotgun round from a few weeks back in smithtown. it was there that ryan rolled a 224 only to be shown where the exit door was when wodzinski rolled a 257. one thing about ryan though, he appears to be resilient and he appears to bring his "A" game week in and week out. jerome dietz was about to find out how much of an "A" game we meant.
by the time the championship game had started, ryan was now full throttle ahead. dietz was going to need to be outstanding if he were to win his first ever LISBT Junior scratch title. keep in mind dietz had just competed a 953 in qualifying. therefore, we had the makings of a great finals match. however, what has been a trend with a few #1 seeds this summer, sometimes sitting out as the first round bye can be a disadvantage. While dietz did finish on the plus side with a very respectable 210, it wasnt nearly enough as ryan went on to a 244 and kept the prize for himself. Ryan earned title #1 on the LISBT. Dietz earned the respect and confidence he will need in going forward.
Junior Scratch Division qualifying Highlights (200+/800+): jermoe dietz, mastic 249/953, david ryan, selden 279/943, mike wodzinski, east meadow 246/856, william knoth, patchogue 235/851, chris jove, port jeff 233/849, michael levine, dix hills 239/843, louis dalessio, sound beach 236/834, corey hirt, mastic beach 235/818, mark marra, east islip 214, sarah o'brien, islip terrace 226, chris anderson, great river 231, rory vanderbilt, east northport 223, amy bohleber, miller place 206, pat cooley, east islip 204, tom scherrer, holtsville 223, cheryl drusin, holbrook 247 and tony desaro, port jeff 200
--------------------
the adult handicap division this past friday night turned out to be a numbers contest. as in how high can you bowl. 4 bowlers went over the top this past friday night by clearing the 1000 plateau with handicap. obviously, all 4 bowlers advanced into the final rounds.
leading the 4-game qualifier and jumping from 5th place to the top spot during the last game was 2003 LISBT champion (Shirley) ron cammarata, sayville at 1039. cammarata put together quite a show scratch wise. he rolled games of 215, 212, 236 and 256 (919) to help lock up the number 1 seed. following cammarata and making his third appearance and second consecutive trip into the final rounds this summer was vinny zambito, shirley at 1034. qualifying third was rita disalvo, coram at 1020 and john kingsepp, miller place 1018 rounded out the field of the 4 hopefuls on the way to a championship for 2003. cashing for the night but not advancing jason alexander, mastic beach at 981 and heather miller, dix hills 979.
in the shotgun game, disalvo, zambito and kingsepp all started out strong. each bowler staying clean in the early goings. zambito, the only left-hander in the match started running into trouble in the middle frames and could not get it going after that. kingsepp and disalvo on the other hand were not experiencing such problems. disalvo however was stringing strikes making things tough on kingsepp. when the dust had settled, disalvo had rolled a 226 scratch. with handicap she was at 289. kingsepp, although shooting his overage his average at 194, still did not have enough with his handicap while finishing with a 233. zambito finished with a 204. the stage was now set. disalvo onto the finals vs cammarata. cammarata would be seeking title #2 for the 2003 LISBT.
disalvo started the championship game vs cammarata the same way she finished the shotgun round. throwing strikes and lots of them. cammarata in the meantime and coming off the bye didnt seem to be as strong as he was in the qualifying round. in fact, he seemed to lose the edge. cammarata struggled to a 174 scratch and with handicap gave him a total of 204. disalvo on the other hand, while not as heroic as the previous game, still shot 26 over her entering average and with handicap, easily outdistanced cammarata with a 249.
disalvo was ecstatic and somewhat giddy after the tournament. she went on to thank "Steve Abrams who is simply the best!" for advising her of the LISBT in the first place (Poppa Z was found moments after that remark brooding in a corner of east Islip lanes.) regardless, disalvo was crowned champion and joins kathy wodzinski (Garden City), jenn paxson (Smithtown) and liz field (shirley) as lady champions of the LISBT 2003 adult handicap division. And what a lovely Rita Meter maid she is!
Adult handicap Division qualifying Highlights (225+/825+): ron cammarata, sayville 256/919, vinny zambito, shirley 233/834, john kingsepp, miller place 258/862, jason alexander, mastic beach 265/877, heather miller, dix hills 226/831, matt brazezicke, islip 225/836, jon chiusano, centereach 226/856, gail brunner, baiting hallow 233, kathy wodzinski, east meadow 235 and joe besemer, shoreham 256
--------------------
the Adult Scratch Division produced the nights highest scores. in fact, brad ross, st james climbed in the record books of the LISBT (Click) not once, but twice! Ross is now 6th all time for the 4-game scratch qualifying round as he rolled games of 248. 205, 259 and 289 this past friday night. ross is now 6th all time for his 1001 scratch series. his 289 thrilled the crowd in attendance with ross flirting with a perfect game entering the 10th frame. however, a weak 10-pin on his second shot in the tenth stood in the way and prevented ross from earning an extra $496.00 for the evening if he had rolled the 300. the progressive 300 game fund for the adults will now be in excess of $500.00 next week at garden city bowl. regarless ross numbers were simply fantistic for the night. he truly earned the #1 seed for the night. the 289 by the way is tied for 10th all time in this division.
rounding out the top 4 and advancing to the shotgun round was certainly adventerous. in fact, 2 bowlers took the scenic route. paul molnar, commack was sitting in 24th place after the first round based on a sub par first game of 195. however, molnar has a very impressive track record on the LISBT over the years, especially at East Islip lanes. in fact, in the 4 prior visits to east islip dating back to last summer (2002), molnar has cashed in each of those 4. to go one step further, he was won twice (2002), finished 2nd once (2003) and finished 4th once (2002). to say he is comfortable at East Islip would be an understatement. Molnar was not going to go quietly regardless of a slow start. and quietly he did not go. molnar put together a back 3 of 759 that powered him all the way to the #2 seed at 954. in third, and also not a stranger to east islip was dan brazezicke, islip. brazezicke has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at east islip over the years simply because he bowls there during the winter months. brazezicke used his knowledge of the house and lanes to his advantage as he engineered 4 "Plus" games totaling 942. qualifying in the 4th seed was john ramsey, holbrook at 924. ramsey however accomplished something that will be very difficult to reproduce in the future at ANY tournament, let alone an A2Z tournament. just read what ramsey had to say after learning he had rolled himself into the finals.
"I was mentally already in my car on the way home after the 3rd game had completed. I was tied for 18th place and really was just going to finish out the tournament as quickly as i could and go home when it was over". ramsey needed to call home and tell his wife he would be later then expected. He also needs to listen to yogi with a little more intensity!
indeed ramsey went from 18th to 4th on the strength of his 268 in game 4. however, in order for that to happen, there has to be only one thing that goes his way. and that one thing is EVERYTHING! while ramsey rolled the 268, craig lindahl, ridge had the highest game of the bowlers ahead of ramsey entering the 4th game and vying for the 4th spot. lindahl rolled a 237. considering the tournament was being held at typically high scoring east islip, that alone is an astonishing figure. regardless, ramsey was in the 4th spot and now in position to win the improbable championship. cashing for the evening but not advancing to the shotgun kevin rabich, ridge 911, adam krauss, allentown 905 and 2-time 2003 LISBT champion pete bohleber, miller place 904.
the shotgun round turned into a one sided affair. as mentioned, molnar simply loves bowling at east islip. molnar 259 blitzed ramsey 201 and brazezicke 191 to gain entry into yet his 4th championship appearance on the LISBT at East Islip lanes during the last two summers! Incredible as it seems. the fun however for molnar was over.
brad ross jumped out of the starting gate and blitzed molnar as fast as molnar did to the others in the shotgun round. in fairness to molnar however, he just was not getting the breaks he needed. molnar left 5 4-pins in the process of the championship game and a split in frame 7 sealed his fate for the evening. ross on the other hand was awesome. flushing strike after strike, ross simply was going through the motions as the 10th frame got under way and easily defeated molnar 244-158. ross earned his first ever championship on the LISBT and took home $250.00 for the evening. molnar took home $150.00 for second. he also took his consecutive cashing streak at east islip unscathed. he is now 5 for 5. 2 firsts, 2 seconds and 1 fourth. and competing against the competition he has bowled against, that is quite an accomplishment.
Adult Scratch Division qualifying Highlights (225+/825+): brad ross, st james 289/1001, paul molnar, commack 258/954, dan brazezicke, islip 259/942, john ramsey, holtsville 268/924, kevin rabich, ridge 257/911, adam krauss, allentown 256/905, pete bohleber, miller place 234/904, christina schulze, williston park 264/895, craig lindahl, ridge 270/894, kevin sosnicki, shirley 228/888, frank kase, deer park 227/887, bruce nielsen, levittown 246/887, tom coraci, shirley 258/877, frank vuono, north babylon 236/872, matt cabble, miller place 247/869, jerry figliuolo, east islip 242/865, billy chitty, sound beach 241/864, brian nielsen, levittown 259/856, kenneth reinhardt jr, holbrook 243/848, eryn cully, patchogue 258/843, scott tietler, patchogue 239/838, joe fook, holbrook 269/838, john ciccarelli, port jeff 825, eric barboza, shirley 245, matt traina, farmingville 266, john scarpulla, smithtown 246 and steve garcia, east islip 236

Two tournaments in a row at 100+. who woulda thunk it?!..... a complete scholarship letter distribution for the junior bowlers will take place at garden city bowl and babylon bowl to finish out the season. the garden city scholarship letters will be ready at babylon and the babylon letters will be available through email or regular mail. even if you have already picked up copies of letters from the first half, you can pick up additional copies this week at garden city and the following week at babylon. however, keep in mind, when it comes time to redeem the letter at the LIJBA, you will only be able to use one copy per tournament. scholarship dollars will be available for immediate use for those attending college or trade school..... funny scene this past friday night at ei at the conclusion of the 4-game qualifier. ryan kase, deer park looked as though he had just downed 10 lbs of sugar in anticipation of whether or not he made it to the finals. kid was hyper as christmas morning! being poppa z and the way that i need to be, i made him squirm for another 10 minutes! hey, I HAD FUN! :o) ..... two big tournaments to go...garden city and babylon..... summer has gone fast eh?.... one last thing about the 300 funds. if there are no 300's bowled by the end of the qualifying round at babylon, then the money in the funds will be evenly distributed as "bonus money" via the prize fund for babylon. $25.00 will be added PER place in both divisions per fund amount. keep in mind, the last "bonus" payout may or may not get the full $25.00.... if there are any questions on the bonus payout, either email us or save your questions for either garden city or babyon!
