sayville nY, august 29, 2003

the long island summer bowling tour (LISBT) closed out the 2003 season this past friday night to a capacity field of bowlers. 137 bowlers participated in the season finale at sayville bowl. over $5200.00 was distributed in collective cash for adults and scholarship funds for junior bowlers. what a night. what a season.

there is an old song that we hear every so often on the radio in between the "Yo Momma" and "Yo Yo Yo Me Say What who dat" stuff we hear now so often. :o) It is a song performed by Kansas named Dust in the wind. And that song is a perfect fit for what went on in the qualifying round in the junior handicap division this past friday night.

Jimmy Field, Mastic beach simply blew right past the competition last friday night in almost an unbelievable fashion. field, who entered the tournament with a sanctioned average of 147, rolled games of 194, 206, 236 and 206 scratch that powered his way to a 1138 series with handicap giving him the top seed and a first round bye into the championship match. field's heroics simply overshadowed brilliant performances given by robert matz, coram and timothy burns also of coram. matz, has very quietly and effectively had a great summer. matz rolled "over" games of 233, 210 and 201 that guided him into the #2 slot with a 1029 with handicap and earned him a spot in the shotgun round. matz was also making his third straight trip into the finals. burns on the other hand was equally as impressive. burns opened up the night with a 236 that propelled him to an 836 scratch series that totaled 984 with handicap.

the fourth and final spot into the shotgun round turned out to be a nailbiter for three bowlers vying for the opportunity to compete for a championship. aaron ryan, selden would eventually grab the spot with a combined pin total of 978. the two bowlers that did not get to the 4th and final spot are probably still wondering about those extra pins they failed to knock down. louis giordani jr, shirley and jimmy kavanaugh, ridge failed to make the cut by the absolute narrowest of margins, 1 pin, as they finished at 977. matz, burns and ryan to the shotgun. field gets to sit one game and await the winner.

the bowlers that participated in the shotgun round were all over average for the game and as a result, the match was a very exciting one. ryan entered the tournament at a 173 average and finished his night with a 179/230 with handicap giving him 4th place for the night. burns entered at 188 and went on to finish with a 205/242 with handicap and earned third place scholarship money. matz turned out to be the survivor of the game as he rolled a 193, 26 pins over average that when totaled out with handicap gave him a 249 and the right to compete for his second title on the LISBT.

the championship game between matz and field stayed close for awhile. however, field was simply getting too many pins in handicap for matz to overcome. while matz once again rolled a game over his average with a 174/230 total, field was also rolling a 188/262 and won the match going away to earn his first title on the LISBT.

after the match had concluded, a touching moment occured as jimmy's mom, liz, hugged her son and congratulated him on the victory. it should also be mentioned that liz field was crowned champion at shirley bowl on july 25, 2003 and just like her son, won in dominating fashion.

when all was over, the smiles by all the competing junior bowlers and the families and friends that were with them, made this summer on the LISBT 2003 that much more special.

for jimmy and liz, it certainly gives every bowler who bowls on the LISBT a "Field" of dreams to look forward to.

(OKOKOKOK. That was corny. However, This is OUR website. We write what we want!) :o)

--------------------

when the dust had settled this past Friday at the conclusion of the 4-game qualifying round, 3 of the 4 bowlers in the junior scratch division that were advancing to the final rounds have been there before. in fact all 3 of those bowlers are champions of the LISBT this year. to go one step further, 2 of those bowlers won titles at sayville.

louis dalessio, sound beach won the title at sayville on august 8, 2003 and tony desaro, port jeff won his on june 20, 2003. doug feldman, copiague on the other hand won back to back titles starting with smithtown on june 27, 2003 and then again on july 11, 2003 at shirley. the 4th bowler, adam sher, commack was making his first visit to the finals on the LISBT in 2003.

the 4 bowlers mentioned all had a fantastic qualifying round. dalessio earned the top seed by rolling a 941 highlighted by a 268/749 back 3. sher broke the 900 mark also. the powerfully built commack native put together a 907 earning him seed #2. in the third seed was desaro at 891. feldman jumped from 5th to 4th based on his final last game of 226 that pushed his total to 884. finishing a distant 5th was amy bohleber, miller place at 853. cashing but not advancing to the final rounds were anthony tretolo, mineola at 842, doug stedfelt, east islip 841, chris jove, port jeff at 826 and Cherly Drusin, holbrook 825.

in the shotgun game sher and feldman would battle it out till the very end. desaro 194, was never able to gain momentum and pretty much was out of contention as the 6th frame had started. sher and feldman were engaged in a battle of who could throw the most strikes. feldman was attempting to become a 3-time champion on the LISBT this summer while sher was trying to get himself an opportunity to compete for his first title. when all was said and done, sher would get to move on to the championship game while feldman would pack it up for the night. however, when you have to pack your gear up after you have just rolled a 244, you pretty much know you have done your job well for the night. sher was just 3-pins better, but still, sher was advancing because the scorecard read 247-244, advantage sher.

the championship game between dalessio and sher was like two gladiators with a major attitude about being defeated. both bowlers have a strong passion for the game they love and in addition, both bowlers dont desire to be second fiddle....Ever. throwing stike after strike after strike, the match, just like the prior match would not be decided until late in the game. and in a manner that has been ever so present on the LISBT 2003, one bowler would get that extra hit he needed in order for that bowler to be victorious. dalessio got the hit and won the match 245-236.

the summer of 2003 on the LISBT finished very nicely for dalessio. quite possibly the biggest learning lesson that was given to dalessio is something that should be considered by all bowlers. and that lesson is about hanging in there when things get tough. dalessio simply was not on top of his game as the summer tour began and he looked as though he was not enjoying himself. however, things turned around for him and he finished the LISBT 2003 with two titles under his belt. there is an old saying and it goes like this: quitters never win and winners never quit.

dalessio is a winner. he just wouldnt quit.

Junior Scratch Division qualifying Highlights (200+/800+): louis dalessio, sound beach 268/941, adam sher, commack 245/907, tony desaro, port jeff 256/891, doug feldman, copiague 243/884, amy bohleber, miller place 267/853, anthony tretolo, mineola 223/842, scott stedfelt, east islip 214/841, chris jove, port jeff 233/826, cheryl drusin, holbrook 237/825, derek vandervoort, moriches 248/824, jack castellano, centereach 226/816, jerome dietz, mastic 233/811, ed barton, east moriches 225/807, michael yamond, east northport 224/801, peter smith, brentwood 233, billy o'shannon, commack 246, sarah o'brien, islip terrace 225, corey hirt, mastic 214, dave sulzer, bohemia 211 and david ryan, selden 203

--------------------

say this much for the adult handicap division this past friday night: there was movement...LOTS of movement. only 1 of the bowlers that was seeded in the top 4 at the conclusion of game 3 survived game 4 and advanced into the final rounds.

climbing into contention from the 6th seed (tied) and gaining the top seed this past friday night was john kingsepp, miller place. kingsepp bookended his 4 game set with a pair of 250+ games that helped his cause. kingsepp opened up the night with a 258 scratch and finished the 4-game qualifier with a 255 scratch. total his 4 games up with handicap and he was alone at the top with a 1042. the only bowler to advance into the final round that was in the top 4 after 3 games was paul casella, port jeff at 1029. casella actually led the tournament at the 3-game mark with an 804 and had a 40 pin cushion to work with in the top seed. despite his 173 in game 4, casella had enough to gain the #2 seed and advance into the shotgun round. climbing all the way from the 10th seed into the #3 seed was LISBT 2003 Champion Brian Darcy, patchogue. Darcy won the sayville event just a few weeks ago and was bidding to become a 2-time winner on the LISBT for 2003. the final spot was taken by gary lindahl, ridge at 1001. lindahl rolled 4-games over 200 scratch for the night and it was his 214 in game 4 that jumped him 2 spots from the #6 seed into the #4 seed at 1001. Lou Giordani, shirley just missed the cut and placed 5th with a total of 994.

in the one game and done shotgun, all the bowlers stayed competitive until the late frames. darcy would wind up finishing 4th for the night as he rolled a 210 with handicap. casella on the other hand finished 3rd based on his 221. the only bowler of the 3 that would bowl his average in the shotgun game was the bowler who would advance into the finals vs kingsepp. obviously, that bowler was lindahl who rolled a 192 scratch. with handicap, his 228 was 7 pins higher than casella. lindahl and kingsepp to the finals.

the championship match between lindahl and kingsepp would be rolled on a scratch basis. both bowlers had the same handicap with 36 pins each. kinsgepp and lindahl both bowled well and both had some unlucky taps along the way. things were very even entering the 10th frame. the last tap that lindahl threw however could have been deadly. on his first in the 10th, lindahl threw as good as a shot as he could throw, yet the 5-pin drove straight to the sideboards and never even touched the 7 pin. sweeping 7-pin. lindhal converted the spare. just as important though, lindahl threw a strike on his fill ball forcing kingsepp to double in the 10th frame if he were to go on and win his first title on the LISBT. regardless of what lindahl did on his last shot, kingsepp was now in complete control of the match. Kingsepp threw a truck on his first shot and all 10 went to the back pit. his second shot however got to the outside boards way to early and as expected, the ball reacted early and went high into the pocket by the time it had reached the head pin. as a result, there was little or no chance that all 10 would go down in the process. they didnt and lindahl won the match 232-230 and went home with the championship.

gary lindahl has a knack for these type of things. last year on the LISBT 2002, lindahl won the very last tournament of the year at port Jeff Bowl as well (He won at PJ 3 times last year!). it really is just one of those things that cannot be explained. Whatever reason that can be made, the one thing remains the same. last tournament? Lindahl in the house? perhaps we should just go home. :o)

Adult handicap Division qualifying Highlights (200+/800+): john kingsepp, miller place 258/898, paul casella, port jeff 266/821, brian darcy, patchogue 203, gary lindahl, ridge 226/857, lou giordani, shirley 243/894, robert miller, bohemia 228/824, bob feldman, copiague 236/859, patricia buckley, patchogue 212, dominick minneci, shirley 225/810, jackie cantwell, rocky point 235/808, david principe, mastic beach 226/841, gail brunner, baiting hollow 215, bob andretta, rocky point 218/831, bill gocinski, coram 248/847, patricia dealy, selden 212, theresa castellano, centereach 244/802, jaime curley, holbrook 213, arthur ryan, selden 228, ed vandervoort, moriches 222/840, jessica allen, north bellmore, 222, ed walsh, ronkonkoma 215, warren newman, commack 242/828, carla ryan, selden 201, rob bennett, deer park 218, rene andreu, patchogue 246/818, anne quarry, north babyon 204, melissa dichiara, blue point 216, eric schulhaus, hauppauge 214, tony deluise, port jeff 203, ray goyco, patchogue 221, jason alexander, mastic beach 221, heather miller, dix hills 204, ron cammarata, sayville 209 and josh noble, bayport 216

--------------------

the adult scratch division this past friday night produced the highest scores of the evening. eleven of the thirty one bowlers in the field rolled 4-game qualifying series of 900 or better. the four bowlers that advanced into the final rounds all scored 950+. two of those bowlers broke the 1000 mark and both climbed into the top 5 on the all time records list for the LISBT. in fact, one bowler topped the 1000 mark for the second consecutive week. and if that wasnt enough, that same bowler broke the 300 game fund in game 3.

craig lindahl, ridge was simply magnificent. the 2-time 2003 LISBT Champion lindahl moved into the top seed at the conclusion of game three based on the strength of his opening 3-game series of 767. in fact, lindahl rolled the first 9-strikes in game 2 and was trying to become the first adult bowler to roll a 300 game on the LISBT this summer dating all the way back to May 30, 2003 when christine anania, smithtown turned the trick at westbury. since that time, the 300 game fund for the adults had climbed up to $633.00. lindahl added a 244 in game 4 that helped secure his top spot with a total of 1011. the 1011 scratch series is good for 3rd all time on the LISBT for the 4-game qualifying round.

overshadowing the effort by lindahl however was alex cavagnaro, north massapequa. cavagnaro topped the 1000 mark for the second consecutive week by rolling a 4-game set of 1007. cavagnaro is now 5th all time on the LISBT in the same category previously mentioned. however, while his 1007 series was just as impressive as the series lindahl rolled, it was game 3 that put cavagnaro in the limelight as the evening went on. it was just one week ago at garden city bowl that cavagnaro flirted with perfection as he rolled the front 10 strikes en route to a 287. this past friday night however, on the very last pair at sayville bowl On lanes 59-60, cavagnaro wasnt to be denied. cavagnaro threw 12 straight strikes (aided by a very late 10-pin in frame 11) and went on to be the sole owner of $633.00 extra for the night. talk about not wanting to bowl on an end pair? perhaps everyone should reconsider the thought process on those end pairs! even with the 300 game and the 1007 series, cavagnaro still would not catch lindahl in the process. he did however lock up the #2 seed and advance into the shotgun round.

in the third seed was LISBT 2003 Babylon champion scott tietler, patchogue. teitler in fact came within 4 pins of the 1000 mark by rolling a 996 series that included a front 8-279 in game 4. only a stubborn 10-pin denied teitler of sharing the wealth of the 300 fund with cavagnaro for the evening. the 997 rolled by teitler is good for 11th all time on the LISBT for the adult scratch division.

locking up the 4th and final spot to the shotgun was keith lessuk, holbrook. lessuk rolled a 958 series for the night that resulted in being 12-pins better than 2003 LISBT Champion Kevin Sosnicki, shirley who finished 5th. lindahl to get the first round bye while cavagnaro, teitler and lessuk advanced to the shotgun. in addition to sosnicki, also cashing for the night was george mottern, riverhead 938 and john shelak, coram 921. having outstanding performances but just missing cashing was tom coraci, shirley 914, kenneth reinhardt, holbrook 907, christina schulze, williston park 903 and john farley, center moriches 903. farley by the way, rolled the front 9 strikes in game 3 and finished with a 278.

the shotgun game turned into a fun affair for two of the surviving bowlers. cavagnaro and lessuk were matching strike for strike. teitler on the other hand just couldnt catch a break and never was able to gain any momentum. it wasnt until an open in frame 9 that lessuk himself would drop out of contention. while lessuk did go on to roll a 223 and teitler managed a 190, cavagnaro was flawless and was headed up the highway like a mac truck doing 90 MPH as he finished the shotgun game with a 257 and advance into the finals for the second consecutive week.

the championship and final match of the summer featured two bowlers that broke the 1000 mark for the night. it also featured one bowler in lindahl that had won twice previously this summer on the LISBT. it is worth mentioning as well that both bowlers possess an inner drive of relentless determination to win outright at all times. on this particular night however, cavagnaro was going to be very difficult to defeat. and that is how the final match panned out. cavagnaro threw strikes early and often and clearly was holding nothing back. lindahl on the other hand started off well by throwing strikes early in the game. however, the middle frames is where the difference in this match would be determined. cavagnaro never stopped throwing strikes from the 4th frame on while lindahl was running into problems by then. by the time the 8th frame had started, it was clear to all the only thing left for this particular night was the margin of victory in favor of cavagnaro. while lindahl obviously was disappointed by the time he finished off his game, he still finished it off in a graceful manner and concluded his summer season on the LISBT with a 167. it would be a 90 pin difference to the 257 by cavagnaro.

for alex cavagnaro, his championship and 300 game on the LISBT Sayville was no accident. cavagnaro has been a name synonymous with junior bowling during the 90's and is now having moderate success as an adult bowler as well. the young man was even featured in sports illustrated in December 1995 as one of the "faces in the crowd" section that is famous to the magazine. at the time, cavagnaro was the youngest bowler in the history of the sport to roll 2-300 games within a week of each other. he was 11 at the time. as the saying goes, "winning never gets Old". in the case of cavagnaro, there is still 20 years until "Winning has to get to middle aged before it gets to old!".

kinda Scary just thinking about that.

adult Scratch Division qualifying Highlights (225+/825+): craig lindahl, ridge 267/1011, alex cavagnaro, north massapequa 300/1007, scott teitler, patchogue 279/996, leith lessuk, holbrook 263/958, kevin sosnicki, shirley 257/946, george mottern, riverhead 258/938, john shelak, coram 279/921, tom coraci, shirley 238/914, kenneth reinhardt, holbrook 255/907, christina schulze, williston park 266/906, john farley, center moriches 278/903, joe fook, holbrook 246/896, brad ross, st james 256/881, john scarpulla, smithtown 257/877, matt traina, farmingdale 257/870, john flanagan, medford 226/864, scott cicale, holbrook 259/864, kevin o'Keefe, brentwood 247/859, kevin rabich, ridge 235/833, brian nielsen, levittown 227/832, matt umbenhower, bayport 247/832, brian fook, holbrook 235/826, bart cully, medford 225/826, steve gregg, coram 234, john ciccarelli, port jeff, 234 and adam krauss, coram 227

Keglers Korner...........

The move from Babylon to Sayville turned out to be the right move bowler wise at the end. A2Z Still feels terrible about having to move the tournament at such late notice. However, there was not one negative comment passed along to us that suggested we messed up. In fact, quite a few bowlers supported the move by taking the time to suggest to Steve A or Poppa Z that is was indeed the right thing to do. We hope the management at Babylon Bowl can understand the position we were in and accept us back next year and go from there..... Steve A and Poppa Z have agreed that if there are any additional tournaments that will be run in the wintertime, it will only be one tournament. We both feel that we have a unique and pleasant club of bowlers. We do not want to overexpose ourselves and become "just another tour". We enjoy the spring months in anticipation of the summer season that will be upon us in a few months. To disrupt that would not be the right thing to do. We feel as though by next April, the batteries will be recharged and everyone hopefully will be ready to go..... Speaking of next summer, we will try to improve what it is we do. We will not make changes for the sake of changes. However, we have entertained thoughts of bowlers through the summer and quite honestly, some of those thoughts have grabbed our attention. One thing is for certain, there will NOT be an increase in the price of our tournament. It will remain $39.00 for Adults and $33.00 for Juniors. And of course, the online discount will still apply...... Thats it for us. You have been great... and the METS STILL STINK! (They give me heartache! But I love em!)..... Oh...one more thing....Lets Go Whoever Plays the Yankees! :o)

Ta Ta For Now.... Enjoy!

Until Next Time.....

Steve A and Poppa Z! A2Z Bowling! The LISBT!
