east islip NY, may 28, 2004
the 2004 season opener for the long island summer bowling tour started off in spectacular fashion this past friday night at east islip lanes. 128 bowlers participated in the fourth opening day tournament for the a2Z/LISBT. lots of familiar faces in the field of 128 with some new faces as well. for one of the champions crowned this past friday, the thrill of victory paid a long awaited visit to a former champion of the LISBT and in addition, it was time to say goodbye to those "teen" years!
for Tom Scherrer, holtsville, at the conclusion of the championship game this past friday night in the junior scratch division (Scherrer had survived the shotgun round by defeating matt kingsepp, miller place and philip tjimos, bethpage 227-206-201. Louis dalessio, sound beach also "Cashed"), there were two reasons for him to flash a smile. first, tom celebrated his 20th birthday a day earlier and second, for the first time in a long time, scherrer experienced the thrill of victory. scherrer deated jason brochhausen, east northport 205-191 to earn championship status. in the words of Scherrer, "I havent won any junior tournament for nearly two years. LIYBT's, JBT's, you name it. i have been bowling in as many tournaments as i possibly could have. however i just havent won". in addition, Scherrer stated,, "ironically, the last tournament i won was an a2Z. two years ago in august at port jefferson I was able to defeat Steve Novak".
one could walk away from tom at that moment and admire his memory bank. however, considering the young man has just completed his sophomore year at william patterson university in mahwah new jersey, majoring in history, one could also assume if anyone knows about the past it would be scherrer.
scherrer though seemed content and a bit relaxed afterwards. perhaps that "chimp" on his shoulder was growing a bit too large. he reflected a bit and finally added, "The Streak Is Over. It's So Nice To Get Back Into The Winners Circle. Long Time Coming For Sure. Feels good... Feels good".
perhaps what tom meant to say was two streaks were over. in addition to his victory, the streak of his teen years was eliminated as well!
Congratulations to tom scherrer and happy birthday to him as well!
in other action this past friday night:
john porter, bayshore and louis giordani jr, shirley were declared co-champions this friday night in the junior handicap division! jason cornacchio, shirley and alyssa dunn, medord shared 3rd place honors as well!
also earning scholarship dollars for the night were jason gano, lindenhurst and joe fischer, east islip.
please see "Kegler Korner" located at the bottom of this web page in regards to this division.
david reed, aquebogue earned top honors as he qualified first in the adult handicap division and went on to defeat paul nevadomski sr, west babylon 225-162 in the champion ship game. lou giordani sr, shirley and lou cornacchio, shirley rounded out the field of the finalists in that division as well.
turning in a marvelous effort was sherry charbonier, farmingville at 1229 and tom kolakowshi, farmingdale 1225. rounding out the cashers for the adult handicap division patricia buckley, east patchogue 1186, james campitiello, holtville 1185, joe prozor, lindenhurst 1185 and david principe, mastic beach 1182.
just missing however turning in strong numbers were jennie bryan, franklin square 1173, former a2Z Champion jennifer paxson, patchogue 1168, kevin cantwell, sound beach 1165, bob feldman, copiague 1164, vinnie zambito, shirley 1163, david thomson, sayville 1160 and former a2Z Champion Ron Cammarata, sayville 1160.
mike fagan, greenlawn, overcame a slow start that placed him in 17th after game 1 and 8th after game 2 in the adult scrach division. an unusually low scoring tournament through 3 games, with a very solid field of bowlers participating, it wasnt until game 4 did fagan (279) and the rest of the field start to heat up. as a result, the dash to the final 4 was crowded and spirited.
the fight to the shotgun round that would advance 4 bowlers was as tight as it could be. while fagan 266/1245 clamped down the top seed at the conclusion of game 5, brian corrigan, patchogue 265/1179 nailed down the 2nd spot and a trip into the shotgun round as well. alex cavaganaro, north massapequa 237/1157 secured the 3rd spot after game 5. the real fun however was the race to the fourth and final spot. when the dust had settled, gary garcia, wheatley hills 218/1131, would be the bowler that survived the cut to the shotgun. the difference in wood count for places 4 through 10 would be a mere 14 pins. just missing the cut was former 2-time a2Z east islip champion paul molnar, commack at 1126 while rick papandrea jr, east islip finished at 1124. rounding out the cashers was former a2Z East Islip champion craig lindahl, ridge at 1120.
the shotgun game stayed close for awhile with all three bowlers rolling strikes early and often. however, as we have seen in the past, when alex cavagnaro brings his "A" game to the lanes, his opposition needs to bring the a game and nerves of steel as well in order for them be successful in defeating him. cavagnaro was on fire as he threw 10 dead flush strikes and defeated garcia and corrigan 289-229-180. cavagnaro on to the finals vs his good friend and PBA Member fagan.
the lord giveth... the lord taketh....
throwing just as many strikes that cavagnaro had thrown in the prior game, fagan took advantage of a two soft shots thrown by cavaganaro in the middle frames and never looked back. while cavagnaro made an attempt to get back into the game by doubling up in frames 6 and 7, fagan was locked in and by the time frame 9 had arrived, it was pretty much lights out for cavagnaro. fagan went on to roll a 268 while cavagnaro threw an impressive but short in pin count 225. (they played for a buck and a soda anyway! lets not get weepy here OK!).
for fagan, with no regional to attend this weekend and his allowed eligibility in all "Lustig" tournaments up to this point in time, his appearance at the A2Z shouldnt come as a surprise to many of the scratch competitors that compete regionally or in the "Lustigs" as well. keep in mind however, every scratch bowler that competed this past friday night knows that on any given night.... well..... do we need to go any further?

on to sayville for the next stop..... pre registration is heavy for this event and online registration is once again encouraged. bowlers are reminded by pre-registering, you save $3.00 automatically on your entry fee! in addition, sayville will mark the start of our "regular" format of 4-games with 6 on the pair max. entry fee is also the normal $39.00 for adutls and $33.00 for juniors..... we did have some first night rough edges in the scoring room this past week due to a new operating system (XP) being used for the laptop that is used for the brackets. we apologize for the delay in getting out the bracket pairings and for 2 bowlers that we needed to return the bracket money to. the issue was addressed the day after the tournament and we are "OK" in terms of that area in going forward.... we needed to address a very sensitive issue in the junior handicap division that resulted us in post calculating the tournament results two days after the event. while all parties involved are disappointed in the outcome, logic was the overwhelming factor in regards to the re-post of the standings..... great to see a bunch of familiar faces this past week as well as some new faces as well.... all in all...things couldn't have turned out better for the start of the memorial day weekend.... Until Next Time..... Steve A and Poppa Z! A2Z Bowling! The LISBT! :o) Any tidbits or other news, email A2ZBOWLING @ aol.com or click here! |
