ed gocinski, coram, jim buonaiuto, "Da" Bronx, Guy Rodrigues, Shirley and Ricky Papandrea, East Islip all won titles this past week as the a2z/LISBT visited Shirley lanes for stop number nine on the summer tour!

papandrea was simply awesome. bowling in the adult scratch division, papandrea opened the night with a 300 game and never looked back during qualifying. his 1043 scratch series places him 3rd on the all time high list for a 4-game scratch series in a2z history! he fell just 5 pins short of a front three 800 series with his 795 total for games one, two and three. papandrea would go on the win his first title on the a2z as he defeated one of the all time greats on the a2z tour in craig lindahl, ridge in the championship match. matthew vega, "da" bronx and adam ishman, butler, pa also turned in great performances. timmy modavis, rocky point barely missed the cut yet had a very strong night as well.

in the adult handicap division, guy rodriguez had just enough in his tank to defeat david ryan, selden to win his first title as well. rodriguez, on the strength of his 253 scratch in game 3, edged out shotgun survivors louis giordani sr, shirley and mark paone, mastic beach to gain entry into the finals. ryan stood at the top seed based on his fantastic qualifying round of 1046 with handicap.

in the junior handicap division, ed gocinski grabbed his first title on the a2z as he defeated robert baculy, mastic beach. baculy had qualified 3rd for the evening and defeated 2nd seed victoria dalessio, sound beach and louis giordani jr, shirley in the shotgun round. for gocinski and dalessio however, the evening had a significance. gocinski rolled his first ever 700+ series on the strength of his 722 front three scratch games! in addition, gocinski now joins brothers bill and RJ in the champion club for a2z bowlers! not a small accomplishment to say the least. as for dalessio, how proud of a moment must it have been for all the dalessio's on this night. victoria turned in her first ever 200+ game of her bowling career with a 216 in game 2! kudos for victoria and ed along with all the other competitors in the junior handicap division!

jim buonaiuto, "da" bronx was pumped! just after qualifying first in the junior scratch division, buonaiuto was seen pacing the corridor floors and seemed ready for battle in the championship match. however, it was a "good" pace meaning, the young man was having fun, and you could tell. he was smiling from ear to ear! buonaiuto may have been enjoying the moment for different reasons as well,  and not one person could fault him for doing so if we was. the tall, slender young man from "da" bronx, "drove over 3 hours" to get to shirley lanes last friday being challenged by the near 4 inches of rain that fell in the new york city area that night. we dont know if that is totally nutso or perhaps, just one helluva devoted bowler! either way, as the evening progressed, the young man was sure happy he came.

as far as the junior scratch division is concerned however, buonaiuto would win the division as he defeated yet another fine junior bowler in a2z history in doug feldman, copaigue. in fact, it was almost one year ago, at shirley lanes where feldman won his second consecutive title on the a2z for the summer of 2003. feldman made the bronx native bowl. although buonaiuto won in a decisive manner, feldman kept the young man honest with a 225 of his own. louis dalessio, sound beach and dominic giordani, shirley finished out the cashers for the tournament. all in all however, 13 junior bowlers would earn scholarship dollars for the night.

not a bad night overall for everyone!

The real stars of the A2Z! (Part 1 of a 2 part special)

one of the most important factors of running bowling tournaments is you need to have a steady foundation in terms of support group. the behind the scenes people. a2Z is very lucky to have some of the finest score runners a tournament can have. laurie dalessio, sound beach, ginny gocinski, coram and denise matz, coram.

along with pam dietz, mastic (not pictured), all of the ladies that run the scores on a weekly basis really and truly have a tough job to do. we certainly hope the bowlers of the A2Z tour appreciate what a fine job they do. without them, it would be so much more difficult to run a successful tournament.

all of our score runners are moms to bowlers that participate in the a2Z. laurie watches louis and victoria compete in the junior ranks as does denise watch her son robert compete in the junior ranks as well. ginny on the other hand, in addition to RJ and Ed in the junior ranks, also keeps tabs on how things are going in the adult division as elder son bill competes on a regular basis as well.

while all of these ladies are watching anxiously as the family members are competing, they professionally tend to business at the end of each and every game by recording the scores and then its on to the paddock area for reporting purposes. the accuracy of the numbers being translated into the computer system is near 99.9999999 percent. that is a truly remarkable accuracy ratio. Bowlers are the happiest when scores are reported accurately. in a way, it is as close to working under the gun as you can get with almost zero margin for error. and the ladies of the a2Z, simply get it done. end of statement.  

So, perhaps in the next tournament or so, even a tournament down the road, make sure you say some kind words to our score runners. we are positive they would be receptive to the kind remarks.

and we mean that!
