131 A2Z Bowlers jammed into port jeff bowl this past friday as the LISBT/A2Z 2005 tour made stop #3 on the 14 week Circuit. with every bowler in the house gunning for the 300 game funds that are available to them, and with all the strings of strikes thrown this past friday, including the front 11 by one adult participant, the real excitement involved a graceful 11 year old deer park junior bowler who quite simply, stole the show for the entire night.

starting with the junior handicap division, 11 year old erik zimmerman, deer park, climbed all the way from the bubble position (4th place in qualifying) and took home top honors as he defeated top seed vincent purificato, calverton 262-205 in the championship game. zimmerman was on the plus side of the grid three times during his 6 games of tournament play. and when we say plus, we mean scratch plus! Zimmerman rolled a 258 in game 3 of qualifying and then rolled scratch games of 219 and 214 in the playoff rounds to finish out his opposition. it was the first title earned on the a2Z tour for zimmerman and needless to say, by the time erik left the building this past friday night, he was proudly wearing his a2Z Bowling championship t-shirt! Great Job by a great young man! in addition to zimmerman and purificato, bradely kelsey, selden, holly zink, port jeff, ryan kase, deer park and peter briguglio, massapequa all took home well deserved scholarship money in the process.

turning to the junior scratch division, matt kingsepp, miller place defeated jJ Romanski, plainview and took home a champion t-shirt as well. kingsepp also came from the 4th seed to earn the title. kingsepp defeated andrew turner, coram and tim burns, coram in the shotgun round to earn the right to compete vs romanski. the championship game of kingsepp and romanski was simply a drag out, grind it out match with neither bowler showing signs of pulling away from the other. in the end... and all you need to do is outscore your opponent to claim victory, kingsepp got the few extra pins he needed en-route to the 195-193 victory. in addition to the bowlers just mentioned, mike vecchio, port jeff also took home some scholarship money as well.

turning to the adults, matthew mcmanus, holbrook defeated top seed jeff frohman, hauppauge in the championship game of the adult handicap division. mcmanus need OT to defeat billy decicco, coram in the shotgun round along with paul casella, port jeff who placed 4th overall.

in the adult scratch division, bill gocinski, coram pushed shane ohliger, medford to the limit this past friday night in the championship game and ohliger responded in a very big way. ohliger was looking at either throwing two strikes in the 10th frame that would earn him the victory or anything less than two strikes would earn him second place money. ohliger took no chances as he absolutely buried 10 in the pit on the both shots he needed leaving nothing on the deck except the pin sweep. billy chitty, sound beach and nick kallner, queens rounded out the top 4 finishers.

for those keeping tabs, frank grillo, port jeff came with a single 10 pin of hitting the adult portion of the 300 game fund in game 2. grillo settled for a 299. MANY adult bowlers cashed in on the 8 in a row pot, none of them however could put 12 together in a single game.

For the record, the last 300 game recorded for the Junior Division is held by Adam Sher, Commack and Louis Dalessio, sound beach, both rolled perfect games on June 11, 2004 at North Levittown. In the Adult division, Ricky Papandrea Jr, east Islip turned the trick at Shirley Bowl July 23, 2004. Papandrea Jr also rolled a 300 the previous week at Farmingdale, July 16, 2004.

both funds continuuuuuuuue............. sayville next! Ah the Suspense!

Keglers Korner...........

Perhaps Vito Genova "The Dad"...NOT "The Kid"..... gave us all a bit of a preview in regards to the 300 game funds. Genovam co-director of the Long Island Youth Bowling Tour (LIYBT),  rolled his very first sanctioned 300 game on June 2, 2005 at Rockville Centre Lanes during game 3 of league. As you all know by now, A2Z opens the second half of our season at Rockville Centre Lanes and is very excited to be making the trip into Nassau, the first of 3 consecutive trips into Nassau we would like to add. Hmmmm..do you think we will need to wait THAT long till another 300 game is bowled on the A2Z?...hmmmmmm.... come to think of it, Vito DID mention it only took him "38 YEARS" during the process....". Imagine what the 300 fund would be if we DID have to wait 38 years for another 300 in the A2Z?! Oh jeez....

Sometimes, it is very difficult to say good-bye. Certainly, this good-bye is on par. Junior Bowler Andrew Turner will be headed off to a new start, fresh slate along with visions and dreams as he is headed for Pennsylvania along with his family in a Dad related job re-location. However, we need to realize when one door closes, the door of opportunity opens. And that... is a good thing...not a bad thing.

Andrew Turner established himself this year as one of the premier HS Bowlers in Sufflok County competing for the Suffolk County HS Champion Longwood HS Boys Bowling Team. Turner, a sophomore, averaged an incredible 216 during the regular season earning himself All County honors. Turner has also been a regular on the A2Z tour for the last 2 years or so and is one helluva young man to be around. His passion for the sport of bowling along with his presence of charm, wit and overall good natured attitude makes Andrew a very, very special person to not only the A2Z family, but to the entire bowling community. He will be missed...yet...we all are rooting for him to find his niche and passion once again  in Pennsylvania. Andrew will succeed wherever he goes for the reason alone of what a very special young man he is. Although Andrew may not realize why he needs to depart Long Island now, he will realize years from now, there is a plan for all of us and in the end, everything always works out for good people. You are never given anything you cannot handle in life. To ALL the Turners, best of luck... and please come back and visit the A2Z peeps when you get the chance to do so!

From a personal note to Andrew from Steve A and Poppa Z... Thank you Andrew for being you! If we can offer at this time just a few more words of wisdom... I think Steve A and Poppa Z would like to say this.... "Andrew... you can go to bed now. The scores have been posted! Get some sleep. You have classes and a match tomorrow!" <wink>...  That's just between Andrew, "A" and "Z".....

Until next time!
