garden city nY, July 29, 2005
the A2Z / LISBT 2005 concluded the Nassau Run of houses at garden city bowl last week. 111 bowlers participated in the event that gave the three city Nassau run a total of 321 bowlers that participated. once again the action at garden city produced some wild scores along with yet another rare moment in a2Z history. how about we just kind of jump into the mix and explain.
rob gotterbarn sr., garden city south certainly had reason to pop his buttons when all was said and done this past friday night at garden city bowl as the lISBT / A2Z 2005 concluded stop number 9 on the summer tour. gotterbarn had just defeated jason lucas, amityville in the championship game of the adult handicap division to take home top honors for the night. the fact that gotterbarn had plenty of room to distance himself between lucas and third and fourth seeds louis cappelinni, west islip and kathy wodzinski, east meadow normally would have been enough reason to celebrate the victory. this night however, would prove however to be a rare moment on the A2Z tour. in fact, only once in the five year history of the tour, has such a rare moment occurred. and as strange as it seems, the last time this very special moment occurred was indeed at garden city bowl.
thirty minutes prior to gotterbarn sr. winning his title, daughter rebecca gotterbarn, garden city south had taken care of business in the junior handicap division by winning the championship game in dominating fashion. while the accomplishment of rebecca was certainly worthy, we need to explain a bit the victory came at the hands of her brother rob gotterbarn jr., garden city south! we guess you could say this night turned out to be a real barnburner eh? kudos to nicholas lupo, bethpage and nicholas robles, bayside for being part of history as well this past friday night as third and fourth place finishers.
june 6, 2003 marked the night kathy wodzinski (The Mom) and Mike wodzinski (the kid) of east meadow became the first ever parent / child combo to win titles on the a2Z tour on the same night! it is a bit ironic kathy qualified fourth for the event this past week and had an opportunity to play spoiler to such an accomplishment. kathy and mike now need to move over on the sofa a bit and make way for rob sr and rebecca gotterbarn can join them.
a2Z always seems to run into "first times" for this...and first time for that... however, once those times are met, the "next" time always seems to arrive sooner than later. in the situation of same night adult / junior champions, it just doesnt happen too often.
congratulations to the Gotterbarns and also to the "Wodzillas". moments like these just dont come around too often... unless of course we are talking garden city!
turning to the scratch divisions, fresh off his 13 place overall finish at the team USA event held in indianapolis, indiana, vito genova, franklin square had just enough in the tank to hold off brian lestz, roslyn twice this past friday night to earn the championship of the junior scratch division. genova finished 2 pins ahead of lestz in qualifying and topped jack castellano, centereach and louis dalessio, sound beach. dalessio also participated in the team USA tournament. lestz went on to victory in the preliminary shotgun round to earn yet another shot at genova. sometimes you need three shots.
genova jumped out of the box off the bye round and put plenty of space between him and lestz early and won going away 232-173 in the championship game. genova earned an additional $181.00 towards his always growing scholarship fund for college while lestz earned $123.00 for the night! Sometimes being second for the night isn't so bad after all!
in the adult scratch division, alex cavagnaro, north massapequa came, saw and conquered. based on the strength of a back end 819, cavagnaro highlighted his evening in game four of qualifying by rolling a 300 giving him a four game total of 1066. the 1066 now moves alex into third place for all time high 4-game block on the a2Z tour. lou seda, east islip, making his third straigh trip into the shotgun, had to be feeling snakebit somewhat as seda qualified second with a surreal 1012 qualifying score, 54 pins back. speaking of consecutive trips into the finals, damion collins, amityville was making his second straight trip qualifying fourth and kenny hosek, bay shore qualified third for the evening as well. collins survived the shotgun round as he defeated hosek and seda to earn the right to bowl vs cavagnaro.
cavagnaro and collins are not strangers, lets get that out in the open. they have competed vs each other for the last few years in high roller events both on and off the record. each has respect for the others talent and each knows what the other can do. therefore, getting sloppy competing vs each other is not very high on the list of things to do list, especially if you want to win. neither competitor disappointed in the championship match.
in fact, the only shot that collins wish he could take back, and he acknowledged it was his shot in the 9th frame. "it Wasnt a good shot on my part. I knew it the second it left my hand. Game over at that point. Alex wasnt going to defeat himself, not tonight". collins was correct on both points. his shot in the 9th came high and never really was in play from the moment it left his hand. Collins covered, however, it was too late. cavagnaro put the finishing touches onto his night in the 10th frame and left the building a champion. at least on this night. never know when these two will meet up again.
overshadowed a bit for the night, amanda beck, oakdale became only the second woman bowler in the history of the A2Z to roll a 300 game. beck joins christina anania, smithtown in the exclusive club. anania rolled hers on may 30, 2003 at westbury bowl. it was the first 300 rolled by beck in her bowling career. lets also mention the fact all three shots in the 10th were up to here.... no explanations needed!
Until next time.....
Chow for now!
