Bay Shore NY, august 26, 2005
With Two weeks remaining on the A2Z/LISBT 2005, 154 bowlers filled bay shore lanes to the rafters this past friday for stop #13 of the 14 week tour. One more week to go... and the rest the say is history on the A2Z/LISBT 2005!
in the junior handicap division, rockville centre a2Z 2005 champion jimmy mcgill, port jeff rolled a 252 scratch in game 3 that helped pave the way to the top seed of the evening with a 1041 series with handicap. mcgill finished 30 pins ahead of ed cheslak, rocky point at 1011. finishing 3rd and 4th respectively and advancing into post tournament competition were nicholas robles, bayside (984) and ryan Gotterbarn, garden city south (908). just missing the cut were rebecca gotterbarn, (977) garden city south and nicholas lupo (965), bethpage. gotterbarn and lupo earned scholarship money for the evening as well.
the playoff rounds was a treat for the JH bowlers. in the very spirited round of 3, robles would outlast his two competitors and earn a birth into the championship game vs top seed mcgill. the championship game was also a marvelous event as both robles and mcgill were playing to win as both bowlers threw key shots when they needed to. at the end however, the young man from bayside had just enough left in the tank as he went on to defeat mcgill to earn championship status along with an A2Z Champion t-shirt for his effort. robles joins mcgill in the winners circle for the A2Z/LISBT 2005.
in the junior scratch division adam chase, seaford has just finished off a stellar bowling career at island trees high school in nassau county this past year. the soon to be freshman at st johns university established numerous records during his HS career and this past friday, chase showed us all why he is considered one of the best junior bowlers that long island has to offer come crunch time.
chase overshadowed fantastic performances by ryan kase, deer park and jonathan trzcinski, bay shore. former a2Z champion kase qualified first with a 907 series followed up by trzcinski at 904. both bowlers rolled a back end 700 that solidified their spot into the championship rounds. qualifying 4th into the shotgun round once again was corey hirt, mastic at 883. hirt has been magnificent this year on the A2Z with two tournament victories along with several shotgun and championship game appearances. finishing off the pace but just missing were bobby baculy, mastic beach and joe novara, east patchogue.
post bowling play however belonged to chase on this night and he used the "one and done" shotgun game to serve notice to kase. chase rolled a 257 to oust hirt (233) and trzcinski during the process. chase was just warming up.
chase literally blitzed kase (This chase and Kase stuff is fun eh?) with a flurry of strikes from the get go that may have stunned the deer park native for just a bit in the early frames. chase went on to roll a 277 to earn the top prize of the evening while kase finished as runner up for the second time this summer (Shirley). both bowlers however had a great night scholarship wise as kase actually took home just a bit more in scholarship money by taking home $164.00 for the night while chase earned $157.00. the extra scholarship dollars were earned via optional bracket dollars.
for the evening, a total of $1082.00 in scholarship dollars was well earned by the junior bowlers of the A2Z on this night in Bay shore. and that... is why A2Z is running there tournaments for the kids to begin with. what a great night for all!
Great job by all the junior competitors and congrats to Nicholas Robles and Adam chase for joining the winners circle of 2005 on the A2Z/LISBT. wear those shirts with pride.
wayne cheslak, rocky point is always one of the first bowlers to arrive at the bowling center each and every friday for an a2Z event. his passion and love for the game is very refreshing. cheslak has bowled in 12 of the 13 adult handicap division events including bay shore this year on the tour. however, he has yet to get into post tournament play and at least on this night, perhaps cheslak was going to look at things a bit differently in his mental game while preparing for the event.
prior to the event this past friday night, cheslak seemed more determined as ever. cheslak offered these comments to A2Z Co-director steve "A" prior to the tournament. "tonight, I am going to bowl 6 games". six games is the maximum amount of games a competitor can bowl in a2Z event and that includes a championship game appearance.
cheslak was wrong however, he only rolled 5 games.
cut some slack however for cheslak as he was phenominal this past friday night as he qualified first for the 4-game qualifier with an outstanding 1149 with handicap, far ahead of his nearest competitor in 2005 shirley champion meghan kase, deer park (1069). with the top seed, cheslak avoided the dreaded 1-game shotgun round as he drew the bye into the championship round. Cheslak would now bowl 5 games and not 6. next time cheslak needs to be a bit more honest with us all before he makes proclamations! (we cute... aint we?). joining cheslak and kase into the continued tournament would be sal mattera, nesconset and pat scotti, hicksville. mattera would survive the shotgun round and earn the right to compete for the championship of bay shore vs cheslak.
the championship match was a beautiful thing. both cheslak and mattera matching spares and strikes along the way. it was obvious towards the end of the match that one ball was going to be the difference and that is what played out. the good break for mattera and the bad break for cheslak came in frame 8. working on a double and needing a hit to put the pressure back onto mattera, the lefthanded cheslak threw an incredible shot that literally ripped 9 pins onto the deck. only a 10-pin that seemed to rock from side to side and front to back was left standing. while cheslak converted the spare, the break of the match was to the advantage of mattera and he did not give the break back. mattera finishing the match first, locked out cheslak in frame 10 ending any hopes for cheslak to win for the evening. a great win indeed.
for wayne cheslak however, the night was a victory. a huge victory even though he did not win. just a few short years ago found cheslak rehabbing from a serious health issue that kept him out of the game for an extended time. the game of bowling had almost ended for him on difficult terms. his inspiration and determination is well documented by all that know him in regards to his ability to overcome adversity and climb his way back onto the lanes. for that reason alone, it is safe to say that both sal mattera and wayne cheslak left bay shore bowl this past friday night as champions. and for cheslak, one day if and when cheslak decides when the time is right, he will leave the game on his terms and not the other way around. that is a beautiful thing and that is how it is supposed to be. enough of the weepy stuff however, he still didnt bowl 6 games like he "told the world he was going to!". Jeez.... the man just likes to blow smoke. what can we tell ya. ( We still cute...)
whether damion collins, amitville will admit it or not, he loves bowling an A2Z event. everytime collins show up for an event it turns into an event. and this past friday was no different in the adult scratch division.
collins for the second time this year went front 11 during qualifying as he rolled a 299 in game three of qualifying. only a 10 pin cost him perfection. earlier in the year at shirley, collins rolled a 298 during qualifying as well. collins torched the lanes and adult scratch division this past friday night with a 1047 4-game series that easily placed him into the top spot thus earning himself a bye into the championship game. earning a birth into the shotgun round and finishing second during qualifying was eric taylor jr, flushing at 995. qualifying third was robert wunsch, east meadow at 986. the race to the fourth and final spot however came down to 5 bowlers all in the hunt. when the dust had settled however after game 4, it was the 8th seed after three games, joe biscardi, wantagh that was able to leap into the 4th seed and gain entry into the shotgun based on the strength of his 254 if game 4. from there, biscardi continued the hot hand as he finished the nights work of taylor jr and wunsch in convincing fashion. biscardi and collins to the finals.
during this season, damion collins has been to the shotgun round 4 times during the a2Z 2005 tour. he has yet to win however this year and we have poked a bit of fun in the direction of collins here on the web (thats ok... he knows we are riding him a bit). when poking fun at a player or two like we do from time to time is really a tribute to the skill and talent they bring to the lanes. collins is one of the areas best bowlers at the present moment and competing vs him can sometimes not be a treat, especially when you are the other bowler.
on the other hand, one thing about joe biscardi is the left handed bowler from wantagh has been around for many years competing in just about all the major bowling events on long island during those year. he is a tough competitor along with being a gentleman on and off the lanes. the championship match had the makings of a great one. and boy did these guys not disappoint.
matching strike for strike, occasional spare for spare, these two warriors were going at it big time as both bowlers pounded the pocket form shot to shot. biscardi finishing first for the match threw 3 strikes in the 10th frame to finish with a 244. collins however had the one extra hit he needed in frames 1 through nine to put him in a position to stay clean with decent count in the 10th in order for him to win the match. collins threw the first strike in the 10th and now needed 8 spare in frames 11 and 12 to win the match. on his first shot in the 10th, the righthanded collins left the 2-8 double wood on the deck, not a spare that one would want to leave in a position of needing 8 spare. collins however covered the spare attempt in very solid fashion and won the game 245-244. for collins, the 5th trip into post tournament play did the trick.
solid game by two solid bowlers.
one more week to go at farmingdale will close the summer season out. what a great, great summer this has been on the A2Z/LISBT. the bowlers have one week left to strut the stuff. just a feeling it is going to be a wild finish to the end at farmingdale.
Until next time.....
Chow for now!

Announcement From A2Z
The following is a statement that appeared in KEGLERS KORNER for the August 19, 2005 recap from Commack Lanes:
A2Z bowling will be enforcing the same rule we had last summer in regards to the 300 game funds for the last night IF a carry over has been made from the upcoming Bay Shore event. In order for a bowler to collect any carry over funds to Farmingdale in regards to the 300 game fund OR the 8 in a row fund, that bowler must have participated in at least TWO events prior to the September 2, 2005 event at Farmingdale. If a bowler is participating in his/her first or second A2Z event of 2005 on September 2, 2005, that bowler will be only eligible to be a part of the 300 game fund based on entries that night at Farmingdale. Same goes with the 8 in a row option fund. A2Z has many, many loyal bowlers and we want to treat them with loyalty as well. If the 300 game fund is not hit this week at Bay Shore in both the Juniors and Adult divisions, the estimated 300 funds for the Juniors will be approx $290.00 and approx $500.00 for the adults. First time entries we feel should not be part of a split that has been going on for a few weeks up until that point in time...... We hope everyone agrees with out position on the funds.

Korner........... The 2005 FALL CLASSIC to be held at East Meadow Lanes already has been a hit pre-registration wise with our bowlers. The A2Z bowlers have been asking us to run some events during the winter and we feel our brand new FALL CLASSIC and NEW YEARS DAY event held annually at Babylon will get the job done. Quite simply, A2Z does our "thing" during the summer months and the last thing we want to do is interfere with any organizations that hold bowling tournaments during the winter months specifically the LIYBT and the JBT. However, October 23, 2005 does not interfere with any other organization. In fact, A2Z was targeting the October 23, 2005 date for some time now and it wasnt until the LIYBT offered us to share the center with them at East Meadown on that day did we here at A2Z agree that it made sense for both organizations to share the East Meadow facility like we are doing. On the record, this is not a joint event rather a shared event that A2Z has agreed to make way for the kids to compete in the LIYBT on that day. A2Z will be running an "adults only" event at the FALL CLASSIC for that reason alone. For the record as well, there is no annual membership fee at all for LIYBT that bowlers will need to pay in order to participate with the LIYBT that day. In fact, the entry fee ($28.00) for this special 5 game event is $11.00 lower as opposed to a 5-game Junior Event held at an A2Z event ($39.00). The format for the tournament however with the top 6 bowlers gaining entry into the "Varipapa Style" brackets finals will be the same! And that... is a good thing. Adults and Juniors can register for this event at either the A2Z site or LIYBT site. Should be a great time for all. Until next time! :o) Any tidbits or other news, email A2ZBOWLING @ aol.com or click here! |
