babylon NY, may 28, 2006
season number six for the long island summer bowling tour got underway this past sunday night at babylon lanes as a strong field of competitors produced some wild scores and results. 4 major event champions were crowned and for one junior bowler in particular, a fourth straight appearance in the playoff round and a second major title victory was won.
in the junior scratch division, craig wellbrock, calverton can forget about any superstition to the number 13. at the conclusion of game 1 this past sunday night, welbrock found himself all by his lonesome in 13th place 84 pins behind leader matt kingsepp, miller place. wellbrock however finished the last four game +173 thus earning the number 1 seed and a guaranteed trip into the championship game.
kingsepp qualified second for the night at +188, one pin back of welbrock. however, it wasnt anything he did in game one where he lost a pin or two along the way in the standings. kingsepp rolled his second career 300 game to open the scoring for the night. by doing so, kingsepp earned $360.00 in bonus scholarship dollars from the progressive 300 game fund for the junior divisions. you have to figure the pain of finishing one pin off the lead was softened a bit by his accomplishment. jason katz, staten island +172 and 2005 Fall Classic Champion nick klager, hampton bays grabbed the 4th and final spot into post tournament play at +153. katz would go on and defeat kingsepp and klager in the shotgun round to earn a birth into the finals vs Wellbrock.
wellbrock blitzed katz early and often in the championship game and defeated the staten island young man by the score of 237-181. fourth consecutive finals showing for wellbrock and second major title as well during that same time frame. tough cookie eh?
rounding out the cashers for the junior scratch division were Past a2Z champion Adam Chase, seaford, 2006 NY State Public HS Team Champion Member tom greene, lindenhurst and A2Z Champion Noel Ocasio, east Patchogue. great scores by the entire field of junior scratch division bowlers on opening night.
the feel good story of the night however belongs to peter briguglio, massapequa competing in the junior handicap division. briguglio, a veteran of the a2Z bowling tour had an untimely exit from the 2005 tour as he had to shut his summer down in 2005 at the Fourth of July weekend kickoff classic due to a severe case of tendonitis in his knee. briguglio withdrew from the tournament during game four and needed to spend the next few months on the shelf. the rest appears to have paid off in a big way.
briguglio claimed the top seed of the night at the conclusion of game three and never looked back after that. briguglio defeated jen vreeland, holbrook 288-241 in the championship game to take home his first title ever on the A2Z tour. peter in fact killed two birds with one stone with the victory. explains briguglio, "Ive never made it to the top four on an A2Z. It was truly a special win for me, especially coming off last summer".
ed cheslak, rocky point and matthew robles, bayside also qualified into the shotgun game and were splendid during competition. rounding out the cashers for the junior handicap division were steven friedlander, holtsville and joe fishcer, east islip. a total of $1812.00 was earned by the junior bowlers for continued education use via scholarship dollars for post high School years.
Great job by the kids!
the adult handicap division produced some fine numbers as well for the evening. jeff scarola, wantagh qualified first for the five game event at +363 (including handicap). justin builes, levittown was second at +358. qualifying third and fourth and into the finals was veteran A2Z bowler kevin rabich, ridge and alan chuntz, lindenhurst at +296 and +262 respectively. just missing the cut was chris torress, ronkonkoma and alvin horne, patchogue +260 and joe errante, dix hills +259.
in the shotgun game, rabich was making his second major event finals appearance within the last 3 major events (Fall Classic 2005). rabich took care of business early and coasted to victory by easily defeating chuntz and builes gaining entry into the championship game vs scarola. the championship game vs scarola however would be a grind it out affair. with both bowlers all of the sudden struggling to throw strikes, scarola finished off rabich for good by marking in frame 10 securing his title. scarola took home $600.00 for the win while rabich took home runner up money at $300.00. a great night for all adult handicap competitors.
While the over numbers for the adult handicap division were impressive, consider those numbers are factored in with handicap. when the adult scratch division over numbers are close to the handicap numbers, THATS when you know a show was going on at babylon this past sunday night within the scratch division.
at the conclusion of game five, stephen frazzetto, port jeff found himself at the top of the leader board with a +317 (263.40). john conroy, mahopac qualified second at +272 (254.40) while jay marine, selden came in at +268 (253.60). qualifying fourth and into the shotgun round was a2Z Champion Frank Kase, deer park at +251 (250.20). just missing the cut was louis dalessio, sound beach +230 (246.00).
the shotgun game was very entertaining as all three competitors were throwing strikes from the get go. marine however had the extra string he needed to advance as he pulled away from conroy and kase late in the match. the string of strikes would continue in the championship game for marine. only this time he would be on the wrong end of those strikes. Mr. Frazzetto used his five game qualifier as a warmup.
frazzetto opened the championship game with a strike and spare as did Marine. frazzetto on the other hand probably knew it would be best to just end the suspense vs marine by just getting it over with a run the table from frame three. did we mention he did just that? No? OK. Frazzetto ran the table from frame three of the championship match running away from marine by a final score of 280-216.
well, there you have it. the 2006 season opening event for A2Z bowling is in the books. 14 more events to come.
summer has officially arrived. A2Z bowling is back in town!
Should be a fun summer.
Congratulations to all! great job by all!
Until next time.....
Chow for now!

Korner.......... A huge Thank You is in order for two extra "hands on" A2Z behind the scenes workers this past Sunday Night. Cynthia Zagorski gets one of the special kudos awards for handling the check in process for the junior bowlers prior to the tournament. The tournament started on time as scheduled at 6:45 PM and that made A2Z bowlers very happy to say the least. A2Z Champion and current Junior Competitor Corey Hirt got the Adults playoff rounds started without hitch while Poppa Z tended to the payouts process for the Adults at the conclusion of the tournament. Hirt handled the adult bowlers flawlessly..... Funny thing..... this past Sunday marked the 73rd time A2Z organized an event. Still however, first night jitters produce first night wrinkles. Steve "A" and Poppa "Z" put the 5 years of wisdom and knowledge before them and were able to minimize the interruptions in a manner ALL men would do in a moment of crisis. They simply rounded up the supporting team of lady A2Z workers and frankly and honestly put it to them this way, "What do we do next?"..... How about the performance of Adult Scratch bowler Bob Andretta, Rocky Point and the National Anthem eh? A pair of pipes eh?..... Great to see A2Z Bowler Wayne Cheslak, Rocky Point back on the lanes as well. Wayne is recovering from major rotator cuff surgery and his love for the game drove him to a quick return..... Finally, a note to one of our devoted Adult Scratch bowlers Sal Pantaleone, Middle Island. Get Well soon Sal.... everybody misses you at A2Z..... bowlers and staff. Here is hoping your target date in July is all good and we will see you on the lanes then! The young guns need to be quieted! ... Thats it for now...... Until next time! :o) Any tidbits or other news, email A2ZBOWLING @ aol.com or click here! |
