Port Jefferson NY, June 2, 2006

Stop Number two on the 2006 A2Z Long Island summer tour certainly had some home cooking this past friday night at a jam packed port jeff bowl. two local bowlers earned championship status while one junior bowler came thisclose to rolling a perfect 300 game.

in the junior scratch division adam chase, seaford continues to shine on the a2Z tour. chase, who won the New Years Day major event at babylon lanes this past january was remarkable this past friday night. the st. johns university mens bowling team member averaged a stunning 246.25 in the qualifying round easily outdistancing his competitors. chase pounded the pins in his back 3 games with a remarkable 774 series that helped pad his big lead earning chase a bye into the championship game. tim burns, coram, brandon kelsey, coram and darren andretta, rocky point rounded out the top 4 that advanced into the shotgun round. cashing but 2 pins off the pace was multi event a2Z champion craig wellbrock, calverton. burns would outlast kelsey and andretta in the one or done match setting up an opportunity vs chase. sitting out a game on the sidelines had little impact on chase however. burns was up for the challenge and hung around as long as he could. but on this night, burns needed strikes, many of them if he was to defeat chase. chase however picked up where he left off and pulled away from burns near the end by the margin of 253-219. picking up incentive scholarship money along the way, chase earned $218.00 in scholarship money that we are positive will come in handy this coming fall at SJU.

the junior scratch division however once again thrilled the capacity field at port jeff last week, brandon kelsey, mentioned above came within 1 stubborn 10-pin of rolling a perfect game in the opening game of qualifying. it was the second consecutive week on the 2006 summer tour that a junior scratch bowler has earned an honor score ring.

the junior handicap division saw lots of familiar faces to the a2Z tour and in addition, the hometown heros were all out in full force. kristen kingsepp, miller place set the pace and earned the top seed for the evening with a great round of qualifying. kingsepp solidified her place in the standings as she rolled 201 and 203 scratch during qualifying. total it all up with handicap and kingsepp went over the 1000 mark with a 1013 series. the last 3 qualifying spots however came down to four bowlers, all within earshot of the playoff round. when it was all said and done, 7 pins would separate the four bowlers with only 3 advancing. hometown gal Holly Zink, port jeff etched her name into the playoffs as her 211 in the opening game of qualifying helped her to a second place finish at 987. 2005 junior handicap champion and future president of the united states (dont believe it? spend 5 minutes with this kid! brilliant) erik zimmerman, deer park needed every one of his 235 pins he knocked down in game one and qualified 3rd with 984. victoria dalessio, sound beach (941) rolled a 200 scratch in game 2 and went +30 over average in game four to just squeak by desiree moorman, ronkonkoma finishing at 940. while moorman was finished for the night, zink ended the night for zimmerman and dalessio 20 minutes later by winning the shotgun game. kingsepp vs zink, miller place vs port jeff, lady vs lady.

both the young lady bowlers were ready to rumble and both performed remarkably well in the championship game. when the lights were finally turned off for the evening, kristen kingsepp earned the title as she defeated zink 246-222 to take home the first place scholarship money of $125.00. zink doesnt need to feel too bad however. she took home $75.00 for continued education expenses. zimmerman and dalessio both earned $50.00 for a great showing as well.

the adult handicap division certainly had a familiar face in the number one seed as veteran a2Z bowler james campitiello, holtsville rolled a front 3 and back 3 of 600+ well over his 170 league average. with handicap, campitiello finished the qualifying round with a 1056. campitiello was competing in his 28th all time a2Z event this past friday night. while campitiello has cashed on the a2Z summer time on a few occasions, this was his first trip into the final four. to top it all off, he earned the bye into the championship round.

speaking of firsts, kevin ohrnberger, shirley was making his first ever finals on the a2Z tour as he qualified second with a very impressive 843 scratch and 1035 with handicap. need another first? michael conroy, mahopac was competing in his first ever Adult Handicap tournament in his young career. conroy qualified third at 835/1011 for the four games. conroy debuted on the a2Z tour last year as a junior bowler. arthur ryan, selden on the other hand is a two time major event champion and he qualified fourth with an 864/1004. within striking distance after game 3, donna poio, shirley and michael cantwell, rocky point just missed the cut but still cashed for the evening as did 10 bowlers in the adult handicap divsion. in the win and you in elimination game, conroy prevailed as he defeated ohrnberger and ryan to set up his match vs the waiting campitiello.

perhaps waiting in the wings proved to be a bit much for campitiello or perhaps it was just nerves that got to him in the championship game that was to become his undoing, however, he just never seemed to get going and looked more tentative as the championship game progressed. meanwhile, conroy looked as cool as you can get. with campitiello struggling, conroy took full advantage and settled the match by the 3/4 mark. all that was left in the match by frame 10 was to make it official. conroy prevailed and wound up taking home the first place money of $350.00. campitiello earned $200.00 for the good nights work.

the adult scratch divsion for the second straight week turned into the one act play as billy chitty, sound beach put the lights out and he did it in a hurry. chitty, formerly of miller place has spent the better part of his bowling career competing at port jeff bowl. if there is any one bowler that competes at port jeff that knows the house inside out, its chitty. and boy... does he know that house!

chitty opened up the night with a front 3 of 772 and never looked back. literally. he was amazing and he truly was the number one seed of the night in the adult scratch division by rolling a 1027 four game block. a2Z 2006 patchogue champion sal Pantaleone, middle island was a very pleasant surprise entry as pantaleone was weeks ahead of schedule for his return to the lanes following a serious physical setback a few weeks ago. A2Z was alerted earlier in the evening of pantaleones return and gladly made room for him in the division upon hearing the news. as a result, you have to ask WHAT setback?! Pantaleone looked as sharp as ever as he qualified second with a 955. pantaleone in fact was the sole winner as he hit the game 2 8 in a row fund of $120.00 (Game 1 was not hit and carried over). qualifying third was patrick deangelo, medford at 938 while john conroy, mahopac qualified fourth at 933. Conroy joined his son as the first ever parent/child combo to gain entry into the playoff rounds as adults. just missing the cut were matt cabble, miller place (927), steve faber, holtsville (926) and walter ryan, port jeff (916). pantaleone would go on and defeat deangelo and conroy in the shotgun setting up his match vs chitty. this night however, was all about the house.

chitty picked up right where he left off during qualifying and made life tough for panteleone and for the first time of the night, pantaleone was perhaps starting to wear down a bit. chitty struck quickly and often and he went on to defeat pantaleone to earn the title.

well... all sports fans talk about it come playoff time.... dorothy talked about it to aunt emm and bon jovi was able to make a song and sing about it. for the finalists and champions.... billy chitty, kristen kingsepp, holly zink, victoria dalessio and darren andretta?

who says you cant go home! Its alright...its alright...its alright! <Wink>

Congratulations to all!   great job by all!

Until next time.....

Chow for now!

Keglers Korner..........

A big hearty thanks to Laurie Dalessio for pinch hitting for Steve "A" during checkin. "A" was away at a college reunion and if he goes to another one, "Z" gonna kill him...... Dont know if anyone noticed, but once again, an A2Z event at Port Jeff produced the downpours! .... everytime we go to Port Jeff, the lawns get watered pretty darn good eh?!..... A2Z was questioned the other night at PJ in regards to why we only advanced the top 4 at Babylon for our season opener. We did indeed advance the top 5 on NYD 2006. Our response to that is simple, NYD 2006 the event started at 1:PM and extra time needed to run a top 5 event isnt an issue. However, when we start at 6:45 PM, time does become an issue thus we only advanced the top 4 on opening night. Hope all is understood by those that asked..... A2Z is sorry to the 10 bowlers we had to turn away this past Friday night. 9 on the pair is a bit tough to take in tournaments like ours and in addition, we were running 10 minutes late as it was. We hope you understand and take advantage of our pre-registration link.....Great Job by the entire staff at PJ on Friday night. Proprietor Yvonne Francis sure knows how to make bowlers feel welcome.... absolutely fantastic to say the least...... Thanks a bunch!

Until next time!
