commack NY, June 9, 2006
The long island summer bowling tour / A2Z Bowling held all time event number 75 this past friday night at commack vets lanes. a full house of competitors were on hand to compete and celebrate the event. one family in particular had an additional reason to celebrate as the became only the second family in A2Z history to have three different family members earn a title on the summer tour.
in the junior handicap division, newbie jeremy schuster, bayside had reason to celebrate his first ever a2Z event as he qualified first for the evening for the four game qualifying round. schuster was 19 pins over average for the four games as he set the pace earning himself a bye into the championship game. rocky point HS bowling star ed cheslak made his second appearance into the playoff round this summer as he qualified second 23 pins behind the leader. ryan gotterbarn, garden city south, had a splendid opening game of 203 scratch that helped secure seed number 3 into the playoff round while east patchogue native meghan stephens finished 6 pins ahead of victoria dalessio, sound beach to finish out the final 4 bowlers that advanced into post tournament play. stephens is a member of the bellport HS Girls varsity bowling team while dalessio is a member of the rocky point HS varsity bowling team as well. stephens was victorious in the shotgun elimination game that set up her match vs the rested schuster.
schuster and stephens in the championship match played cat and mouse most of the way throughout the mid frames. schuster however pulled away late in the match and went on to defeat stephens to earn the championship for the evening. schuster took home $125.00 for his winning while stephens earned $75.00 for her showing.
in the whos who of suffolk HS boys bowling, robert gibiser, smithtown (Smithtown HS Bowling) set the pace in the junior scratch division as he finished 10 pins ahead of louis giordani jr., shirley (William Floyd HS bowling). a2Z Champion and 2006 Suffolk HS Singles champion craig wellbrock, calverton (Riverhead HS bowling) qualified third and david thaw, centereach (Middle Country HS Bowling) edged out nick windschuh, ronkonkoma (Connetquot HS bowling) to qualify fourth for the event. tim irvin, holbrook (Connetquot HS bowling) finished 10 pins off the pace and finished 6th. in the shotgun elimination game, giordani, marked in the first frame then precisely went on to run the sheet from frame 2 on with nothing but strikes en route to a 290 game that ended the night for both wellbrock and thaw during the process.
momentum carried over for giordani in the championship game as well. with gibiser sitting out a game with the bye, giordani fresh off his victory had enough gas left in the tank to defeat gibiser to earn the championship for the night. the victory for giordani had a significance however. giordani joins brother dominic and dad Louis giordani sr. in the winners circle on the A2Z tour. the giordanis join the kase family, deer park, frank, meghan and ryan as the only family that has 3 different family members that have won titles in the history of the LISBT. quite an achievement to say the least. congratulations to louis jr. for a job well done.
speaking of frank kase, the deer park gentleman climbed the ladder this past friday night from the number four seed to win the adult scratch division. chase defeated number two seed bobby wunsch, east meadow and number three seed keith byrne, east islip in the elimination game setting up his title appearance vs 2-time a2Z major event Junior champion doug feldman, copiague. kase jumped all over a horrendous bad break for feldman in frame 7 (8-10) and finished off the stony brook college student for good by closing with a flurry of strikes that would earn kase the title. all is good however. kase and feldman see each other frequently as both compete and spend time at babylon lanes during the summer and winter season. here is a hunch we will see both of them down the road at a future a2Z championship setting.
you couldnt help feeling a bit giddy for chris schlamp, shirley this past friday night. schlamp, a regular a2Z competitor, made his first ever appearance into the playoff round just one week after HIS bowling buddy kevin ohrnberger, shirley made HIS first playoff appearance as well in the adult handicap division at port jeff bowl. for the record, schlamp qualified third for the evening along with gary schaefer, lindenhurst (2nd) and vito genova, franklin square who qualified fourth. leading the pack for the night was joe errante, dix hills. errante earned the first round bye while schlamp, genova and schaeffer were due battle in the shotgun game. the crafty genova TCB early and coasted to victory setting the stage vs errante.
while neither errante or genova was overly impressive in the championship game, genova rolled 1 pin over average scratch and finished with a 202 that was plenty enough to take home the title vs errante. it was the second title for genova all time on the a2Z tour. genova joins son vito Jr. in the winners circle of the A2Z tour. and for A2Z, the only match we are waiting for is when the two vitos hook up vs each other in the championship game. imagine the recap of THAT one. we have faith it will happen one day. count on it.
Congratulations to all! great job by all!
Bandrowski Rings Dime - falls short For Big Pay Day
kevin bandrowski, speonk came with a solid 10 pin in game four this past week leaving the 300 game fund in tact for the adult competitors. bandrowski, an a2Z major event champion threw what he called "The best ball of the game" on his last shot to no avail. being a good natured young man, bandrowski took some needlling from some of the bowlers on his misfortune. bandrowski politely asked the management of commack lanes for the 10 pin he left to take home as a souvenir. a wish that was granted. bob illare, east islip, never at a loss for words offered these words of wisdom for kevin in regards to the single pin. "this is what you need to do. Take the pin home, go to the backyard with a shotgun, mount it on top of a fence, and blow the thing into bits and pieces! You will feel much better about the Money You dont get to take home!". Cant make this stuff up... just cant.
Until next time.....
Chow for now!

Korner.......... Steve "A" and Poppa "Z" would like to thank all the loyal bowlers of the A2Z tour for making tournament 75 a possibility. Never in a million years did either "A" or "Z" imagine such a number would be reached. The bowlers, family and friends of the A2Z make Friday Nights in the Summer on Long Island truly special. While Saturday through Tuesday is the time we all wind down and recharge the battery, by Thursday of the following week, it seems everyone is chomping at the bit once again in order to be around bowling friends in just a few short hours. Sometimes, "A" and "Z" take a few moments of a tournament or two just to take in the smiles, laughs and cheering at the events that make it all worth while. A2Z has become one large family. Steve "A", Poppa "Z", workers, bowlers and bowling centers. All on the same page...at the same time. Sometimes, its not pretty.... but most times.... it seems to get the job done. It may not mean that much now. But when A2Z is all said and done and has become a memory, most of everyone involved for the first 75 tournaments and beyond, will be able to smile and remember what a great time we all had. For now, lets leave a tender moment alone and be thankful for the time we have together. Thanks for 75! Here is looking to the future and for the game we all love. Bowling. Steve "A" and Poppa "Z" Until next time! :o) Any tidbits or other news, email A2ZBOWLING @ aol.com or click here! |
