Coram NY, June 16, 2006

coram lanes hosted stop number four for the 2006 long island summer bowling tour this past friday night. an overflow field of 133 bowlers jammed into the 32 lane bowling center. eighty of those bowlers competed in the adult division while fifty three competed in the junior ranks. in fact, One of those juniors bowlers experienced a storybook ending to the night. An ending ALL bowlers dream about while only a few will ever experience it.

ed gocinski, coram had everything going for himself this past friday night in the junior scratch division. the longwood HS junior bowling star was competing on his home turf and he made the most of his opportunity as he led to four game qualifying round earning a bye into the championship game during the process. gocinski averaged a splendid 231.25 during qualifying. gocinski in fact rolled a back three games of 706 scratch that helped solidify his first place finish. the 700 was the only 700+ series rolled by a junior bowler this past friday night. qualifying second was multi a2Z champion craig wellbrock, calverton at 905 while nick klager, hampton bays finished 3rd at 903. matt kingsepp, miller place used his 279 in game two to nail down the final spot into the shotgun game as he finished the evening with an 892. just missing the cut but cashing in on some much needed scholarship dollars for the night was matt komorowski, shirley (882), sean Hoffman, smithtown (881) and darren andretta, rocky point (877). klager would go on to defeat wellbrock and kingsepp in the shotgun game thus earning the opportunity to face the home town hero gocinski in the finals.

for the most part, gocinski seemed poised and relaxed in the championship game from the get go, however, klager looked just as relaxed and anxious too. gocinski did his part in making an attempt to win the championship game as he rolled a very impressive 223. gocinski however missed by the narrowest of margins, 77 pins, as klager put on his best energizer bunny show as he threw a strike in frame one and he kept going and going and going and going and quite frankly, never stopped throwing strikes. add it all up... figure it all out...and klager added his name into the record books of the A2Z tour as he became the 9th junior bowler to roll a perfect 300 game in the six year history of A2Z. klager however became the first bowler EVER to roll a 300 game in the championship game, junior or adult as well. talk about your storybook endings eh? nick klager couldnt have scripted a better ending. job well done.

the junior handicap division finalists had some familiar faces to the a2Z tour as anthony ricci, east moriches led the pack with a 245.25 average (w/hdcp). qualifying second was heather mccormack, mastic along with A2Z Major event champion (Farmingdale 2005) matt dobbins, yaphank both with a 241.50. 2005 rockville center champion jimmy mcgill, selden qualified fourth at 241.00. sal errante, dix hills took home 5th place scholarship dollars but did not advance into the final rounds. mcgill took care of business early in the shotgun game and coasted to victory over mccormack and dobbins.

the championship game of mcgill vs ricci turned into a grind it out affair. ricci performed remarkably well under the circumstances of his first championship showing on the A2Z tour. he finished one pin over average with a 132 that totaled with handicap 222. mcgill on the other hand stayed clean and got the hits he needed at the end and finished ricci off with a 193/237. it would be safe to say mcgill used his knowledge and wisdom of winning on the a2Z tour in addition to a full year under his belt as a member of the comsewogue HS Boys varsity bowling team to his advantage. for such a young man, mcgill packs some serious experience on the lanes.

Great job by the junior competitors, scratch and handicap!

turning to the adult handicap division, long time a2Z competitor and all around great person steve zimmerman, deer park topped the charts after game four as he led the field with a very impressive 237.00/258.00 qualifying round. the lefty hitting zimmerman easily outdistanced his closest competitor by 29 total pins in wood. on this night however, not three but FOUR bowlers would qualify into the shotgun round as 3 of the 4 bowlers tied for the 3rd spot in the win and your in round. qualifying 2nd and all by his lonesome was ed walsh, ronkonkoma at 1003. the three bowlers that tied for the last two positions were alvin horne, patchogue, bob illare, east islip and vinny zambito, shirley. all finished with a 993 total with handicap. four bowlers to the shotgun game. when all was said and done, ed walsh survived the game and would go on to face zimmerman in the finals.

in the championship game, walsh pulled ahead in frame 7 and never looked back after that. zimmerman just couldnt carry 10 in the pit and a bad shot in frame 6 for the most part, sealed the victory for walsh. all walsh needed to do was stay out of trouble the last 3 frames and he accomplished just that. zimmerman finished off his game in fine fashion, however it was too late as the final score of 243-215 went advantage walsh. for walsh, zimmerman or zambito, the win for either of them would have been nice for sure. all three gentlemen are long time a2Z loyalist that have paid dues along the way. here is just a hunch we will see all three of them once again in the finals at some point in time before the year is out. a great win however for ed walsh.

the adult scratch division produced the nights only 1000+ scratch series as just turned adult jack castellano, centereach set the pace with a 1027. long time a2Z bowler and past champion matt cabble, miller place qualified second at 972. 2006 major event babylon champion steve frazzetto, port jeff qualified 3rd at 970 while rob ingrassellino, holbrook grabbed the fourth and final spot into the championship rounds with a 948. just missing the cut was bill gocinski, coram at 930. doug feldman, copiague (909) and Jay marine, selden (903) had an outstanding night as well. frazzetto got the late hit he needed to edge out both cabble and ingrassellino to secure his title shot at castellano.

castellano is no stranger to big moments. he has had his share of memories and huge hits as a member of the middle country HS boys bowling team over the years. castellano however left the junior ranks this past summer and was getting his first taste of the big leagues vs a seasoned pro in frazzetto. but that was then and this is now and judging from the results of the championship game, castellano may have taken the bait, hook, line and sinker from frazzetto without reallizing there was some gamesmanship going on by the crafty vet. the seasoned veteran frazzetto may have caught on early as castellano may have been bothered by some early breaks to the advantage of frazzetto. without skipping a beat, frazzetto played each shot as though it was his best shot to date and there was plenty more to come by way of messenger if needed. castellano in the meantime just never got going and in doing so, frazzetto coasted to victory. One up? First time jitters? who knows. the end result gave steve frazzetto his second title in four weeks. kind of all that matters in the scratch division no? welcome to the show kid. watch and learn.

congratulations to all!   great job by all!

foresto and coram lanes: aging gracefully

game four in the adult scratch division this past friday night was somewhat nostalgic for both Steve "A" and Poppa "Z". neil foresto, commack certainly provided the memories as all bowlers were locked into the pair foresto was on as he approached frame 10. foresto needed 3 strikes to break the adult 300 game fund. for the record, foresto left a 2 pin on his 11th shot and settled for a 289. foresto however, was the first ever A2Z bowler in history to roll a 300 game. the event took place on june 8, 2001 in event #1 held at the very same coram lanes. foresto was 16 years old at the time and was competing in the junior scratch division. 5 years later, foresto, 21 is now one semester away from graduating from hofstra university majoring in marketing. he is an honor student at hofstra as well. lets just say he hasnt lost his bowling touch. A2Z is very proud to have foresto still competing from time to time and it was a pleasure to have him onsite this past friday. just for some added fun, click the following link...as it appeared then...and remains now... as part of history on the a2Z tour. its pretty bad... but... we love it and wont ever change it. the headline read FORESTO STEALS SHOW AT FIRST EVER LISBT! He almost stole the show again this past week! Click the link and enjoy. please dont laugh though. all these recaps come from the heart.

Mike lupica we aint. but lupica aint us either! :o)

Until next time.....

Chow for now!

Keglers Korner..........

Of the 133 entries this past Friday, 53 were Junior Bowlers. That is certainly a treat. The original design of A2Z was for a Juniors only format. Very encouraging to see a great field of Junior Bowlers on hand. The strong field of juniors go hand in hand with the houses A2Z visit during the summer. Strong Junior house programs not only are a great thing for the tour, the Juniors are the future stars of the game. We get to see them first and that is a good thing..... Happy 21st Birthday to Meghan Kase, Deer Park..... Steve "A" and Poppa "Z" still marvel to this day on just how great the A2Z bowlers are. Loyal isn't even a good word. It is sooooo great to see young and a little bit older than young bowlers on the lanes on both sides of the house. The sport of Bowling, statistic wise, is in such need of a jolt 12 months of the year. You wouldnt know that however judging by the field size of an A2Z event. All bowlers need to get the word out about our sport and how great the game really is. Let all the houses know that league bowling is essential. Bowlers are the most loyal athletes. Let these houses know just how you feel. Our game is not about A2Z.. its about the bowlers. Always has been...always will be.....

Steve "A" and Poppa "Z"

Until next time!
