plainview NY, June 23, 2006

the 2006 A2Z / LISBT made its first of two consecutive stops in nassau this past friday night as plainview lanes played host for for the large field of bowlers that competed in the event.

in the adult scratch division, joe costanzo, plainview put the home house to use as he defeated erik olsen, staten island in the championship game to take home top honors. olsen defeated jeremy schaffer, lindenhurst and damion collins amityville in the shotgun round. the crafty veteran cosanzo averaged 247.50 during the four game qualifying round and it was the same 247 he used to defeat olsen in gainin the title. matt cabble, miller place, just missed making his second shotgun in a row by finishing 18 pins off the pace behind collins. steve frazzetto, port jefferson made a strong bid in an attempt to win his third title on the 2006 tour but dropped his guard a bit in game 4 of qualifying and settled for a 6th place finish. a2Z past champion BJ Fuller, amityville, matt traina, farmingdale, a2Z past champion alex cavagnaro, north massapequa and jack castellano, centereach rounded out the top 10 finishers for the evening.

the adult handicap division was highlighted by the lady bowlers. fran gotterbarn, garden city south, marian scotti, hicksville, anne quarry, bethpage and diane leo, bethpage all took home place money for the evening. in fact, quarry and leo finished 2nd and 3rd respectively during the qualifying round and earned a birth into the shotgun round along with a shot at the title for the evening. joe errante, dix hills had something to say about that however. errante, qualifying in the 4th and final seed to the playoff rounds defeated quarry and leo thus ending any hopes for a woman champion to be crowned on this night. the victory by errante set up a showdown with red hot rob ehlers, farmingville. ehlers literally pounded the opposition for the qualifying round by leading the pack by an astounding 85 pins during qualifying. ehlers simply had one of those nights. he opened the night with a 277 and later added games of 277 and 280 scratch that paved his way to the top. errante however was up for the challenge. in the title game, ehlers and errante literally went neck and neck till the end. it was ehlers however that got the extra hit he need as he defeated errante to earn the title. it was the second trip to the championship game for errante in three weeks. perhaps what they say about the third time being the charm will hold true. for ehlers, it was his first title on the a2Z tour with this being his third year on the tour and this past friday being his 20th all time event. great job by rob.

the junior handicap division featured some familiar names to the a2Z tour over the years as a2Z past Champion erik zimmerman, deer park topped all bowlers for the evening during qualifying with a very impressive 837 scratch that included a high game of 230. zimmerman finished the night with 1017 including handicap for the 4 games. ed cheslak, rocky point was even more impressive by rolling an 865 scratch that included a high game of 265. cheslak also broke the 1000 barrier as he rolled an even 1000 with handicap for the evening. rounding out the top 4 qualifiers into the shotgun round were steve kaiser, west babylon at 997 and conor tuohey, medford at 959. also taking home some hard earned scholarship money for the night were karen sadetsky, centereach and adam zimmerman, deer park. adam is the younger brother of erik zimmerman mentioned above. the one and done shotgun game turned between cheslak, kaiser and tuohey turned into a battle of the wills with each shot in the game proving to be more difficult from the shot before. while all three bowlers were sub par for the elimination game, kaiser was closest to average and survived the fatigue battle and earned the shot at the title vs the waiting in the wings zimmerman. kaiser found his second win in the championship game and he would need it. zimmerman as determined as ever rolled a very fine game of 190 scratch but fell a few pins short as kaiser would throw a 211 at the former champion that proved to be plenty enough once the dust had settled. a fine display of bowling by all of the bowlers in the junior division for the evening.

the junior scratch division featured four past and present High School star bowlers that qualified into the final rounds. the leader after qualifying adam chase, seaford (Island trees HS) is currently a member of the St Johns university mens bowling team. chase is a multi champion on the a2Z tour. speaking of multi champions, craig wellbrock (Riverhead HS) qualified second. joe novara, east patchogue (Sachem North HS) qualified 3rd and robert bacculi, shirley (William Floyd HS) secured the 4th and final spot. wellbrock won the shotgun game and would go on to meet chase for the championship.

the match of chase vs wellbrock had everything needed for a great match. nassau vs suffolk. former hS star vs current HS star. former all state bowler vs current all state bowler. the match had all the makings of a great one. the young adults did not disappoint. strike vs strike, more strikes vs strikes. bowling the way the sport was intended and we had two of the best going at it ball for ball. chase eventually won the game and title. however, lets just say the way these two competitors went at it, they both left the building number one along with a mutual respect for each other and the game. quite a show. quite a match. quite a way to end the night.

congratulations to ALL the bowlers that competed this past friday night at plainview. a treat for all and it wasnt even october 31. its why we show up in the first place.

Until next time.....
