centereach NY, July 14, 2006
if it was drama that you desired this past friday night at centereach lanes, then drama was in order. You want to read about some clutch "hits"? Derek Jeter and David Wright have nothing on the A2Z bowlers this past Friday night at Centereach. Lets get it on.
starting in the junior handicap division and the four game qualifying round, daniel rubin, selden saved his best for last and by doing so, he earned a spot into the shotgun round by leapfrogging over nicole desimone, selden (Middle Country HS Girls Varsity Bowling team) and jennifer vreeland, holbrook (Sachem North HS Girls Varsity Bowling team). rubin rolled a 133 scratch in game four of qualifying that was 36 pins over average. vreeland held onto the number four spot while desimone settled for fifth place scholarship for the evening. qualifying second for the night was victoria dalessio, sound beach (Rocky Point HS Bowling Team) with a very impressive +187 including handicap. qualifying first for the event was a2Z port jeff Bowl runner up holly zink, port jeff. the effort by zink earned her a bye into the championship game vs the winner of the shotgun round of dalessio, rubin and vreeland. when all was said and done, vreeland won the shotgun game going away to set up the all girls championship match in the junior handicap division. While neither young lady was able to gain any momentum over the other during the championship game, it wasnt until frame 10 did the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat make an appearance. with zink finishing first in frame 10, and needing a spare for any chance to defeat vreeland, zink was left staring and startled while she looked at the 4-7-9-10 split she had left on the deck after her first ball in the 10th frame. without missing a heartbeat though, zink converted the wide open split and made count on her fill ball finishing with a 214 for the game. vreeland however was left in a good position by only needing a mark and count to close zink out. as startled as zink was when she left her split just a few seconds earlier, you can imagine how vreeland felt as she left the just as wide 6-7-10 on HER first ball in the 10th frame. only this time, the bowling gods were finished for the night as vreeland was not able to convert the very difficult split thus securing the win for zink. if the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat was ever going to be present, it was certainly present this past friday night at centereach for zink and vreeland. some lessons are learned easy while some lessons are learned the hard way. for both young ladies, the hard way paid visit. chalk it up as experience. for the disappointment a few weeks ago for zink finishing second, the experience helped her this past friday. for vreeland, what could have been will have to wait a bit more. it will come however. in the meantime... ZINK-A-DINK-A-DOO!
in the junior scratch division, paul nevadomski, west babylon (North Babylon HS Boys Varsity Bowling team) qualfied first for the four game block and earned a bye into the championship game. bobby baculy, shirley (William floyd HS boys Varsity Bowling team) qualifyied second while tom greene, lindenhurst (Lindenhurst HS Boys varsity bowling team) qualfied third. greene went on to defeat baculy and set himself up vs the rested nevadomski. once again, lindenhurst vs North Babylon would square off. familiar foes in league 1 section XI High School Bowling going at it for it all. lets just say 2006 belongs to lindenhurst. greene defeated nevadomski to take home top honors for the night. for greene, the winning never gets old. greene is a member of the 2006 suffolk county high school champion lindenhurst team that went on to win the states tournament in syracuse last march! 2006-07 for nevadomski cant come soon enough! :)
turning to the adult scratch division, justin warhol, sound beach had a magnificent qualifying round as he easily outdistanced his opponents with a +140 for the four games. matt cabble, port jeff qualified second while damion collins, amityville and stephen torres, east islip finished third and fourth respectively. just missing the cut into the shotgun game was larry darvis, east atlantic beach and doug mcfarlane, west nyack. the shotgun round turned into an ugly affair as all three bowlers had trouble finding the shot on the lane as all were unusually low for the elimination game. collins, if you can believe it or not, survived the lifeboat with a 183. collins the THE GAME vs warhol. Classic written all over it. for the early going, the finals match lived to the hype as both bowlers opened the game with the front four strikes. warhol however found trouble in frame five and from that point on, collins never let him back into the game. collins stayed steady throughout the mid frames, and by frame 8, all what was left was the final score and a miracle needed by warhol. as mentioned earlier though in the match of zink vs vreeland, the bowling gods had called it a night. collins steamrolled his way through the championship game and went on to defeat warhol to take home the top prize of the scratch division. the two gladiators congratulated each other and as they say, thats all she wrote. great win for collins. great night for warhol.
if one started to think that david ryan, selden loves his ladies, one would be best off talking to ryan and get his side of the story. for the second consecutive week, ryan went down to defeat of the opposite sex in the adult handicap division but this time, it had to be a bit more painful as opposed to 7 days earlier. it was a week ago at babylon lanes as ryan lost in the championship game to michelle perretta. ryan however at babylon had himself to blame as he was well below average and never gave himself a chance to win the title. this week however ryan made good as he rolled a 252 with handicap only to be shown the door by eileen kalmus, port jeff who rolled a 261 with handicap. sonna owens, arverne also qualified into the shotgun game based on her strong outing in the four game qualifying round. owens rolled a 215 in the shotgun round and finished fourth overall for the evening. for kalmus however, the trip into the championship game was a "treat", while ryan was given the rest of the night off compliments of kalmus thus giving ryan some extra time contemplating his "trick". whatever... kind of made that up on the fly! Lets continuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue......
ed walsh, ronkonkoma on the other hand, qualified first for the night with an all by himself +259 for the four game qualifying round. walsh, the 2006 A2Z champion at coram certainly falls under the feast or famine category. walsh at times during the 6 years of the a2Z tour has looked unbeatable while at other times, has looked..... hmmmmm....... lets just go with beatable shall we? on this night however, walsh looked as though he was going to be a gentleman and hold the door for kalmus to walk right out with second place money and call it a night. Kalmus on the other hand had other plans. in fact, the championship on this night for the adult handicap division, WITH all the great things walsh did in qualifying, came down to walsh needing to get 1 pin on 1 shot in the last frame. and we ALL know what pin the right handed walsh needed to land now dont we....without uttering a sound.... yes... the solid 10 pin courtesy of his rap in the 10th frame on his first shot. the ball for it all.... one shot...... make it and win..... miss it and let kalmus hold the door instead. walsh would have none of that. he covered the 10 pin with no problem, got the few pins he needed to shut kalmus out. lets also mention one great big HUGE sigh of relief by walsh after the game was over! LOL.... too funny.... but it WAS entertaining watching it all play out for both walsh and kalmus.
great night for the bowlers.... great night for the ladies. Holly, victoria, jennifer, eileen and sonna. lets go girls!
Until next time.....

Our web update was delayed a bit due to the connection to the ISP being down for an extended time..... All is well though..... A2Z has adopted "DOG DAYS" as our theme for the 5-game July 28, 2006 East Islip Event. Why you ask? Beats the heck out of "The July 28th Weekend Kickoff Classic" now doesnt it?!!!!!.....
