"After bowling all summer, I guess everything just came together all in one night. I didnt think that I'd ever have another night like when I won at Shirley last year. Winning pots and the tournament itself, it was a very gratifying night. I was very focused and on top of my game that night. I wish everyone could feel the way that I did on Friday at some point in time on the lanes"

want to hear about a special night? Glad you asked!
Lets start in the junior handicap division. victoria dalessio, sound beach (Rocky Point HS Varsity Bowling Team) made her to the top seed this past friday with a remarkable display of bowling during the four game qualifying round. dalessio was well over average for all four games and she finished off the competition with a career best 277 in game 4. dalessio started her string of strikes in the fourth frame and strung together 8 in a row all the way through the second ball in the 10th frame that paved the way to the top spot. she also earned a bye into the championship round by virtue of the number one seed. east islip DOG DAYS Major event champion ernest dematteo, north babylon (North Babylon HS Varsity bowling team) qualified second for the event. dematteo rolled the first 10 stirkes in the 2nd game and finished with a 285 scratch that helped pave the way for him into post tournament play. qualifying third and fourth respectively was ryan ginsberg, lake ronkonkoma (See keglers korner) and jeremy schuster, bayside. just missing the cut but cashing for scholarship money was cara nielsen, levittown. schuster outlasted dematteo and ginsberg in the shotgun game and would go on to face dalessio for the 2006 championship of garden city on the a2Z tour.
for the most part in the title game, schuster had everything going the right way in the early going. schuster was staying out of trouble on the lanes while dalessio in her words "Pretty bad. I had a 62 after 5 frames and things just werent going very well". schuster though had trouble finishing her off and in fact, opened the door ajar a bit too much with an untimely first ball in the channel in the 7th frame. dalessio worked magic for the second consecutive in the late frames from that point on. dalessio finsished the game with 6 straight strikes from frame 7 and won the match 182-173 scratch surviving the 5 pins she was surrendering in handicap and took home the title. victoria joins older brother louis dalessio in the winners circle on the a2Z tour in the junior ranks. louis now competes in the adult scratch division and only time stands in the way of his first victory as an adult. Dalessio earned $125.00 in scholarship winnings for the win while schuster earned $75.00 for his second place finish.
in the junior scratch division and for the second time ever, two junior bowlers from the same family found themselves facing each other in the shotgun round in an a2Z event. dominic giordani, shirley (William floyd HS Varsity Bowling) and louis giordani Jr, shirley (william floyd HS Varsity bowling) joined anthony pepe, queens in the shotgun round. winner to go on a meet the red hot jonathan trczkinski, bay shore (Bay Shore HS Varsity Bowling) for it all. our guess here is pepe let the "boys be boys" and as he rolled a respective but well below average 190 during the shotgun game while the two "Goodfellas" did what they could to whack each others brains out! and boy, did they come close! in the end though, older brother dominic would outlast "the kid" 246-223 to go on and meet trczinski in the finals. (With all due respect to these two teenagers, these are two of the most polite young people you would want to meet. Cant wait for the day though when they match up vs Dad in the finals in the years to come!)
trivia question on a2Z history: Name the other same family junior bowlers combo that made it into post tournament play on the A2Z Tour and actually met in either the shotgun round or championship round? Answer Below.
Jonathan trzcinski, bay shore is on fire. trzcinski was making his 3rd straight trip into the championship game and was seeking his second title of the summer of 2006 on the a2Z tour (2006 DOG DAYS Scratch Champion). Trzcinski has improved tremendously if it is possible on an already amazing physical game of his during the last few years by dropping 60 lbs during the time covering the past few months. in game two of qualifying, trzcinski thrilled the parents, relatives and friends in the back area as he came within 1 pin of perfection with a 299 in game 3 that helped pave the way to the top seed. however, the talent that is present in the junior scratch division means not a single bowler is about to role over and play dead at the first sight of ANYONE within the division come crunch time. giordani packs a solid punch as well and for the second straight week, trzcinski would leave the building wondering what if. giordani threw strikes a plenty and went on to defeat trzcinski going away to the tune of 233-208. Great job by dominic and great job for the night for jon as well.
seconds after damion collins, amityville ended the night of rick papandrea, east islip and kenny hosek, bay shore in the shotgun round, the dramatics were already in motion. if there isnt a two bowler rivalry on the a2Z tour in the adult scratch division, then collins and billy chitty, sound beach would certainly fill the void. these two very talented gentlemen have faced off vs each so many times in the past on the A2Z tour in post tournament play that both of them by right can claim each other as deductions come april 15. while collins has had some success vs chitty in the shotgun elimination game, collins was seeking his first win vs chitty in the championship game on this his third try in two years. chitty defeated collins july 22, 2005 at plainview and again on august 5, 2005 at shirley. both collins (number one seed) and Chitty (Eliminated in the shotgun game) nearly went to "the dance" last week at shirley on august 4, 2006. well, things come in three dont they? collins and chitty held ground vs each other for most of the way this past week however an uncharacteristic 6 off the 10 chop in frame 8 doomed collins yet again vs chitty. all chitty needed to do was make count and a mark in frame 10 that would shut collins out in the 10th frame and he proceeded to take care of business with one ball when he flushed the pocket leaving only the sweep visible seconds later. game set and match to chitty.
OK. all bowlers that compete in the adult handicap division please pay attention. If you want to make a serious run on the a2Z tour to win a championship, the best way to do so is to mirror the the path meghan kase, deer park paved way for herself in order to do just that.
all kase did this past week was average 243.00 scratch with a low game of 226 in game 1. the left handed young lady was simply flawless the entire night as she easily distanced herself from the rest of the field by 52 pins during qualifying. kase became the first female competitor in the history of the a2Z tour to roll a front and back end 700 series en route to the top spot. seeded second was rob foerster, east meadow followed by josh noble, bayport and bob illare, brentwood to the shotgun round. noble rolled a 300 game in game 2 of qualifying that helped secure his seed into the post tournament play. in the "win and your in" elimination game, illare got some good breaks late and set up his match vs the rested kase waiting on the sidelines. also, for the second time this year, an all lefthanded finals would determine the championship of an a2Z event. On July 7, 2006 at babylon lanes and competing in the adult scratch division southpaws jeremy schaeffer, lindenhurst defeated billy bertuch, yonkers.
with illare giving 1 stick in wood for handicap purposes this past friday night, the 1 pin loomed very large as both bowlers played tough as nails without either one giving an inch to the other. then, in frame 9, disaster hit kase as she clean chopped the 4 off the 7 eliminating any possibility of shutting out illare in frame 10. seconds after the seemingly fatal chop you could almost hear the air come out of the balloon that kase had worked so hard to fill up during the night. collectively though, kase took an extra second or two as she approached her final frame, regrouped and threw 3 pocket strikes. Kase could not have hand placed the 3 shots any better if given the opportunity to do so. however, as mentioned illare was in complete control of the match. What illare was now looking at was to throw the first two strikes in the 10th frame... along with a 2 count on the fill ball... and win. Simple as that. been there done that. on the first ball by illare in frame 10, illare used the same ball placement as kase and just like that.... 10 in the pit with one shot to go. with every match now complete in the center for the night, the next ball thrown by illare would determine the championship on this given night, the tension within the center was entertaining, fun and serious all at the same time. The only noise present was the sound of the pins being reset behind lanes 21 for the rack illare was to roll towards. illare in typical fashion threw the ball up the 1 board and watched the ball drive to the 1-2 pocket only to have leave a plaque 7 pin giving kase the title along with a sigh of relief of team kase. illare ever so gracious and fun to be around acknowledged kase and gave the yound lady her due with a congratulatory handshake and some kind words as well.
the win for kase though ended a summer long slump where she has struggled a bit. Her confidence as well was was starting to border that teetering edge we all seem to be aware of from time to time. said kase "After bowling all summer, I guess everything just came together all in one night. I didnt think that I'd ever have another night like when I won at Shirley last year. Winning pots and the tournament itself, it was a very gratifying night. I was very focused and on top of my game that night. I wish everyone could feel the way that I did on Friday at some point in time on the lanes. It was fun"as an added footnote, the win by meghan now means the kase family, while tied with the giordani family with 3 different family members crowned champions, now stand alone as the only family to have 3 different family members become champions on the A2Z tour for a minimum of two titles each. there is no truth to the rumor however that the giordanis have 29 relatives signed up for the remaining stops on the a2Z summer tour. There will only by 17 relatives bowling instead!
and thats how it was... on the eleventh day of august of the year two thousand and six.
:o)
Until next time.....

Trivia Question Answer: rebecca gotterbarn and rob gotterbarn jr, garden city faced each other in the finals at garden city on july 29, 2005 with rebecca winning the title.
A Parent Nightmare? Not Really
Mentioned above, last friday night marked only the second time in a2Z history that same family junior bowling members met up in the playoff rounds of an a2Z event. We wondered a bit just how either pleasant or painstaking that could be for a parent. lou giordani sr., father to both dominic and louis giordani Jr. while competing in the adult handicap division had this to offer in regards to the outcome: "My thoughts were at the time, how cool would this be if all 3 of us made the finals. Unfortunately, I stunk up the joint in the last game and got pushed from 7th to 18th and that was the end of that. I'm happy for Dominic though. He has really been down lately with the way he has been bowling. I spotted a few things he was doing and told him to work on them and it seems to have paid off. Hopefully this will get his confidence back up where it should be in the first place. Louie on the other hand always seems confident even when he's struggling. Kind of just falls off of him. I think Dom needed the win a bit more than Louie at this moment in time."

Korner.......... Ryan Ginsberg, Lake Ronkonkoma, 5, started yet another ere of bowling for the Ginsberg family of Long Island. In the 70's and 80's, Ryan's grandfather Norm Ginsberg Sr. enjoyed a stellar career in the bowling community here on Long Island. Norm Ginsberg Jr., father to Ryan, is well established here on Long Island in the bowling world of Long Island as he competes in major scratch events and even operates two pro shops, one at Garden City and the other at East Meadow Lanes. A2Z was proud to have Ryan onboard this past Friday night and we certainly hope to see his name circulate in the bowling news right here on Long Island in the years to come. Ryan and Adam Zimmerman, Deer Park are both on records as being the youngest ever competitors on the A2Z tour in the six year history of A2Z. Adam though is now a veteran of the tour... He is all the way up to 7 now!...... Until next time! :o) Any tidbits or other news, email A2ZBOWLING @ aol.com or click here! |
