A2Z bowling paid visit to Sports Plus Bowl for the very first time ever this past friday night. a capacity field of 181 bowlers filled the bowling center for what was truly a great first time event.

jon trzcinski, bay shore (Bay shore hS varsity Boys bowling) continued his sizzling hot streak this past friday as he won the junior scratch division in dominating fashion. the colorful soon to be junior finished 49 pins ahead of his nearest competitor during qualifying as he averaged 244.75 for the four games and then defeated robert matz, coram (sacred heart university) in the championship game to earn his 2nd title of the summer. trzcinski has earned scholarship dollars in 5 consecutive tournaments and has accumalated $598.50 during that time frame as well.  in addition to trzcinski and matz, BJ Baker, tempe arizona (Arizona state university mens bowling), brandon kelsey, selden (Middle country HS Boys Varsity bowling) and ed gocinski, coram (Longwood HS Boys Varsity bowling) cashed for scholarship money as well during qualifying. Matt kingsepp, miller place (Stony brook university) and joe novara, east patchogue (Sachem HS Boys varsity bowling) also earned scholarship money though the sides incentives.

over in the junior handicap division, heather mccormack, mastic (Eastport south manor HS girls varsity bowling) enjoyed a very impressive night as she finished 51 pins ahead of the field during qualifying. the very pretty young lady from mastic averaged a whopping 217 scratch during qualifying easily distancing herself from the number two seed george markotsis, deer park. qualifying 3rd was brad kelsey, selden (middle country hS Boys varsity bowling) while 2006 Major Event Champion and multi a2Z champion ryan kase, deer park qualified 4th. kelsey won the shotgun game vs markotsis and kase to earn the right to meet mccormack in the championship game. in a drag out, slap em out fight to the finish, mccormack became the 2nd half of back to back female winners in the junior handicap division in the history of the a2Z tour as she defeated kelsey 277-268 in the championship game. mccormack joins victoria dalessio, sound beach as the only two female junior handicap division competitors to win on consecutive weeks as mentioned. and if thats not enough... the ladies have won 3 of the past 8 titles in the last two weeks as they join meghan kase, deer park in the winners circle. meghan won the adult handicap division at garden city on august 11, 2006...  bay shore next.... you never know! alex herrera, deer park and cara nielsen, levittown also took home well deserved scholarship money for the evening as well. for nielsen, it was her second straight "cash" following up garden city from a week earlier.

when the check in process was going on this past week at sports plus, both steve "A" and Poppa "Z" had frankie calca, elmont ticketed for the junior scratch division based on physical appearance. afterall, it is pretty much assumed 15 year olds belong vs other 15 year olds. the only problem calca had with all of this is he is 24 years old and you can say he has been there and done that! Jeez... talk about feeling like an... hmmph! and calca wound up showing the a2Z crew on board as well as the other participants in the adult scratch division he was more than old enough to TCB! calca ran through the shotgun round as though there was no tomorrow left for throwing strikes as he literally threw 11 of them to defeat a2Z champion sal panteleone, middle island and 2006 major event east islip champion rick papandrea, east islip. calca left only a solid 7 pin that ended the night for panteleone and papandrea rather quickly. calca was now set up to meet the top qualifier of the evening in 2006 a2Z patchogue event champion john conroy, mahopac. conroy qualified first for the night as he was the only bowler of the evening to break the 1000 mark with a 1012 (253.00). for all the splending things conroy did this past friday night during qualifying, chances are he would have gladly exchanged the missed 10 pin he ditched midway through the championship game for a mark during qualifying in its place. the only mistake conroy made during the night, the missed 10 pin, cost him as calca had just enough left in his tank to win the match and title by a score of 215-210.

well, the comeback queen was at it again this past week at shirley. sonna owens, jamaica certainly knows how to make things difficult for herself... very difficult indeed. it was just a few weeks ago that owens capped off the most remarkable comeback in the history of the A2Z tour as she came from 28th place after 3 games to WIN the 2006 a2Z patchogue event in absolute stunning fashion. this week, owens was looking at another huge climb as she was in 23rd place after game 1 with 3 games left to go in the adult handicap division. our guess is 3 games is an eternity to owens. owens indeed climbed the ladder into the shotgun round once again by the single margin of 1 pin joining michael levine, dix hills, paul kodrasov, cherry hill NJ and anne quarry, north babylon into the shotgun round. kodrasov and quarry were tied for the 4th and final spot thus both bowlers advanced into the one and done game. quarry was also making her second appearance in the shotgun round for the summer of 2006 (Plainview). well, you should have guessed it by now. owens covered her spare in the 10th frame of the elimination game and defeated quarry by 5 pins to earn yet another shot at the title for the summer of 2006 vs the well rested and seasoned multi A2Z champion vito genova, franklin square. as the night ended for john conroy minutes earlier, sonna owens was about to have a finish to forget as soon as possible as well.

with genova and owens practically teasing each other for 9 frames as both bowlers took turns attempting to put the other one away, it wasnt until frame 10 that genova and owens both had some bad luck that left both heads shaking. finishing first and trailing by 3 pins, genova rang a brutal 10 pin on his first shot that he honestly could not have thrown or placed the ball any better into the pocket. he covered his spare and threw his fill shot to the max. with owens finishing last, owens needed only a mark and count to win her 2nd title of the summer as she approached lane 37. on owens first shot in the 10th frame, the right handed bowler simply caught too much oil in the carry down and went flush through the 3 pin to leave the 1-2-4-10 washout standing on the deck. on her second shot and making sure she stayed out of the oil down the lanes, owens caught too much dry area too early and her ball sailed to the left of the 1 pin taking out only the 2 and 4 pins. game and championship to genova. owens denied on yet another great comeback. no worries though... in addition to "Comeback Queen" as dubbed by steva "A" and Poppa "Z", owens may have yet another nickname. "Chucky". We all kind of know she WILL be back... no matter HOW far back she will be!. wont matter. she WILL be back!

Wong On Mend. Comeback Uncertain

All seemed so normal this past friday night at sports plus, especially with benny wong, port jeff in the house. all however was not normal. benny was paying visit and supporting his friends on the lanes as he sat out action due to outpatient knee surgery performed two days earlier. benny has been an A2Z member since year 1 and it is on a rear occasion he is not present at an a2Z event along with his bowling pal vinny zambito, shirley. 2 days removed from surgery, there benny was in a supporting role and having fun like he always seems to do every friday night in the summer. things just wouldnt seem right at an A2Z without benny. wong is chomping at the bit though to make it back onto the lanes "as soon as possible" and has targeted september 1, 2006 at farmingdale as a possible return date. Wong however has promised a2Z bowling that he wont do "anything dopey" in rushing back onto the lanes with the chance of a setback delaying recovery. just a hunch? pencil benny in at farmingdale september 1, 2006... just a hunch. Just a hunch.
