when all the dust had settled just after qualifying this past week in the junior scratch division, one half of the 2006 section XI (Suffolk) High School All County team along with an up and coming star in his own rights had advanced into the finals. the members of the all suffolk county team that advanced were Number one seed 2006 Suffolk High School Singles champion and multi A2Z Champion craig wellbrook, Calverton (Riverhead HS boys varsity bowling), two time a2Z 2006 Summer Champion jon trzcinski, bay shore (Bay Shore HS boys varsity bowling) and Multi A2Z Champion Darren Andretta, rocky point (Rocky point HS boys varsity bowling). Along with the three standouts mentioned that advanced into the playoff rounds was the always improving and star in the making joe novara, east Patchogue (Sachem HS boys varsity bowling). perhaps this past friday night will be a turning point for novara to take the next big step in his bowling career as he put on quite a show in the shotgun round as he defeated both andretta and trzcinski to earn the right to take on wellbrock in the brawl for it all to determine the junior scratch champion of a2Z Bay Shore 2006.
in the championship game however, wellbrock once again showed why he is one of the top junior bowlers on long island as he jumped out of the box early leaving novara in a need to throw strikes early and often in he were to win his first championship on the A2Z tour. it simply didnt turn out that way for novara as wellbrock supplied constant pressure and won the game going away to the tune of 246-190. it was the second trip into the finals for novara for the summer of 2006 on the a2Z tour (Shirley Lanes) however it wont be his last. Novara has quickly matured on the lanes and for this night in particular, he took a giant step in getting to that next level we all talk about especially with him defeating two premier bowlers in the shotgun round in andretta and trzcinski. for wellbrock, this past friday night is just another link to the chain he started to build during the 2004-05 season. this summer alone, wellbrock on two separate trips to florida had successful runs in the junior gold tournament hosted by the USBC and then placed in the top 8 of the teen masters a few weeks later. look for all four bowlers mentioned above to play major roles for their respective high schools this november as the 2006-07 High School season gets underway for yet another great year of great scores.
Talking about taking the next step, how about christina errante, dix hills who took not only her first step but a giant step indeed! competing in her first ever junior tournament, errante, rolled a very impressive 155 in her fourth qualifying game and got the help she needed from above that saw her jump from 7th place after 3 games during qualifying to the 4th and final seed into the shotgun round of the junior handicap division. joining errante into post tournament play was number one seed matt gorman, bohemia (Connetquot HS Boys Varsity Bowling), number two seed desiree moorman (All County 2006 Sachem North HS Girls varsity bowling) and number three seed and 2006 plainview Major Event Champion ryan kase, deer park. kase was appearing in his 4th post tournament play round for the summer of 2006 on the A2Z Summer tour. in the shotgun round, errante would outlast moorman and kase to set up her championship match vs gorman.
matt gorman, bohemia, enjoyed a tremendous qualifying round. the soon to be sophomore at connetquot HS averaged a whopping 221.75 during the four game qualifying round. gorman, a member of the connetquot HS Boys varsity bowling team in 2005-06 as a freshman, should be a key member of the team come this november. however, for all the heroics gorman displayed this past friday, once again, a number one seed on the a2Z tour just never got going in the championship game and just like all the others, gorman paid for his misfortune. while he was rolling his only sub 200 game scratch of the tournament, errante on the other hand was methodically keeping herself out of trouble and converting key spares along the way finishing over average and by the time the game was finished, errante had earned $150.00 in first place scholarship money for her to use for post High School continued education. lets not feel too bad for gorman however, he pocketed a very nice $125.00 for his runner up status as well. all in all, a great night of bowling for the junior bowlers of the A2Z Tour.
the adult scratch division saw some familiar names of the past and present this past friday night as brad ross, st james and bobby wunsch, east meadow grabbed some of the spotlight as they qualified into the shotgun round. ross, who has virtually missed the entire summer tour due to in season surgery was making only his second start of the tour, both coming in the last two weeks and just like that, ross earned himself an opportunity to compete for a championship last week at bay shore as he qualified second. in the meantime rick papandrea, east islip has been on a major tear as he has qualified into the shotgun round 4 of the last 5 times out on tour this summer. papandrea in fact won the 2006 east islip DOG DAYS Major event on july 28th 2006. papandrea qualified 3rd this past week. wunsch on the other hand has competed during the summer season but has struggled. with big game capability at all times however, wunsch made good on a so/so summer of 2006 late in the qualifying round. wunsch made a huge comeback in game four during qualifying as he rolled a 289 in the final game to jump 10 spots in the standings to secure his bid into the final rounds as the number 4. and how about billy chitty, sound beach. for the second time in three weeks chitty qualified as the number one seed for the evening thus securing yet another bid into the championship round. when all was said and done in the shotgun round, ross would extend his night by one extra game as he defeated wunsch and papandrea to earn the right to meet chitty in the finals.
our best guess here is when you open the night during qualifying with a 279 and then close the night with a 300 game, chances are its your night. and that best guess was accurate. chitty came off the bye round and simply took over from where he left off during qualifying by throwing strike after strike after strike. mets fans wish billy wagner could throw as many strikes with 2 men out as chitty was throwing them one at a time at ross. the good that ross was able to accomplish was he in fact stayed clean covering his spares in the early going, but on this night, the only thing spares was going to do was increase the margin of victory for chitty. ross needed to throw strikes at this point in time and lots of them. ross however was starting to look gassed, and in fact, with an open frame late in the match, all chitty had to do was basically stay behind the foul line for his remaining shots. for chitty, it was his second win on the a2Z tour in 2006 and he continues to be one of the dominating adult scratch bowlers in the history of the a2Z tour. for ross? no worries there. he is on the mend... just a matter of time before he reaches the winners circle.
Code Red! no, we are not referring to "your fired" tom cruise and a few good men, we are referring to OUR code red anne quarry, north babylon. quarry, a seasoned veteran of the a2Z Tour since 2001, was competing in her 42nd a2Z event this past friday night in the adult handicap division (quarry missed the latter part of the 2004 summer season and the entire 2005 summer season due to her giving birth to her son michael in 2005). quarry has had her good moments on the tour during those years, but never has she experienced that magical moment where she would leave the building champion for one night. well, from this point on, quarry will be known as an a2Z Champion. kid you not.
all things werent going too well this past friday in the early stages for quarry. after a "nice" 189 in game one in qualifying, quarry was looking at an uphill battle to the shotgun round as she stood in 18th place after one game. from that point on though, quarry was magnificent. quarry fired a back end 692 scratch as she sandwiched a 199 in game 3 with games of 246 and 247 in games 2 and 4 respectively that gave her the top spot and a bye into the championship game. quarry finished 27 pins ahead of 2nd place qualifier kevin ohrnberger, shirley. rounding out the top 4 qualifiers for the shotgun round were howie levine, old bethpage and steve colamussi, centerport. in the shotgun round, levine took care of business early and late as he earned the right into the championship game vs the number one seed "Red". it should be noted that levine has had a wonderful summer in a very quiet way. levine has cashed multiple times on the tour of 2006 for his qualifying rounds. this was however his first appearance into the championship game for the summer of 2006.
in the championship game and the early goings, both levine and quarry looked as though they were competing for the adult scratch championship as strikes and excellent covers were present through frame 5. quarry though started to pull away in frame 6. while levine was game all night up till the 6th frame of the championship game, it was evident to all this was going to be quarrys night.... and after 41 times prior in past years all gobbles up inside her, there wasnt anything that was going to get in her way. quarry finished the night with a flurry of strikes and as fast as you can say 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 (finger break...hold on)......24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31,32....(working on the cramp...hold on a minute please), 33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40 and FORTY FRIGGEN ONE.... just like that..... on try number 42.... the lady in red.... was dancing in our hearts! Cept for howie of course. :o) ah... all is good... cmon! Lighten up will ya please! Jeez. we can hear it now this coming friday from howie... "say wha"?
So, we have it all figured out. sometime in 2009, anne quarry will once again bring it home. hey, it happens every 42 times.... like clockwork! dont believe us? look it up...

how great must it have been for 2006 bay shore champion anne quarry to have had close bowling pals and sonna owens, jamaica on her side this past friday night? owens as well all know by now has made quite a name for herself during the 2006 with her phenomenal late game comebacks that have taken the a2Z tour by storm and in addition, has gained admiration with many. quarry in fact paid tribute to owens and friends this past sunday in a telephone interview with poppa Z discussing her win. "Sonna was great. she really was. you know we made the shotgun round together last week at sports plus. i heard her rooting me on during the finals and to be honest, it meant so much to me to have her in the group with my bowling friends vinny zambito and benny wong cheering me on. every one of them could have headed home at that time of the night but they hung around. it was very special for me, really".
