An Early Fathers day Gift

The action had ended and the lights had been turned off on the lanes this past Friday night at Sayville Lanes when Poppa Z heard a familiar voice behind him asking for a possible favor. Newly crowned Adult Handicap Champion and A2Z regular Kevin Ohrnberger asked if would be possible to mention on our website that he was dedicating his win to his father John Ohrnberger. Poppa Z informed Kevin that there weren’t any real serious write-ups any longer, something that he knew, but Kevin thought he would ask just the same. The conversation more or less ended there.

During the next two days or so, Poppa Z was a bit pre occupied with Kevin’s request and was a bit disappointed that he didn’t ask more about the dedication and the reasons behind it. It was already past midnight and things were just about packed up and it was near ready to call it a night. Kevin seemed however as Poppa Z recalled a bit flush in the face when he asked for the favor. However, one could assume that winning your first ever A2Z title comes with a bit of elation. Never the less, On Monday AM, June 2, Poppa Z emailed Kevin in order for him to elaborate why the victory seemed a bit special. As time passed, it became more evident that perhaps Poppa Z had missed the boat on something special or even more, missed the boat on something very special that meant the world to another person even though there may have been no impact on A2Z.

The following paragraphs is the response Kevin Ohrnberger emailed Poppa Z almost word for word. Kevin did get rather personal with a few people involved in the email and for obvious reasons we have edited the email to a degree where no one in particular will get hurt or think less of. In all honesty, we have read the original email several times over, and even though we know the words by heart, we still find it impossible to get through the email without shedding a tear or feeling emotionally attached to the email (pun intended). It’s a feel good ending and we wanted to share with you Kevin’s words… just about… word for word.       

“When I was around 11-12 years old my parents got divorced. I really took it hard and had a lot of bad feelings towards my dad. I really felt like he didn’t put up much of a fight to keep the family together. As I got older between the ages of 14-20 even though I was living with him I still was very stubborn you know at that age I had all the answers and I knew everything. My sisters, brothers or uncles, nobody could tell me anything. Then one day I got a good dose of reality.

I was in my fathers basement and I found a box labeled “divorce”. As I began to look through it. I realized how wrong I was in passing judgment on my father in regards to the divorce. I really started taking a different view towards him based on the documents I was reading. It turned out I had no idea what my dad and mom were going though, especially my Dad. In October of 04 my mother passed away. She really had nothing, me or my sisters and brother were really in no shape to do anything in the way of services and my father really stepped up and paid for everything and stood by us through everything. So now I feel like I had a lot of bad feelings towards him that I really shouldn’t have had and because of it I lost a lot of time with him that I wont get back, for many years it was a hi and bye relationship and I wanted no part of a relationship with him. No matter how angry I got with him he always supported me and pushed me to be better in school or sports, So now I try to make him a part of everything that I do.

I bowled a 300 about a year ago unfortunately he wasn’t there that night. This last year in league he was there the night I had the front 10 and it did'nt work out and that would have meant a lot to me to have him there for another 300. So I told him one day I will win a tournament for him. He was there Friday night and it meant the world for me to get my first win with him there. I didn’t really show it inside the center but it was a pretty emotional ride home with him that night.” 

Actually Kevin, you did show it inside the center. We just missed the calling out process.
