Section XI (Suffolk) HS Bowling 2005-06
A "Q and A" With
Lindenhurst HS Boys Bowling Coach
Bob Slowey!
It doesnt happen too often that a coach of a team can exit retire at the top. However, that is just what Lindenhurst HS Boys Bowling coach Bob Slowey was able to accomplish this past February 11, 2006 at the Section XI High School Bowling Championship at Sayville Lanes. Slowey's team was crowned Section XI champions and will represent Suffolk County in Syracuse March 4, 2006 at the NYSPHSAA Bowling Championships. After years of service as a math teacher and bowling coach in the Lindenhurst School District, Slowey will say goodbye for good at the conclusion of the school year this June 2006. A2Z Bowling thought it would be nice to say "Thanks" to Bob by spending a few moments with him in order for all of us to appreciate his effort over the years and in addition, give you an idea just what special kind of person he truly is. We asked Bob a few questions in regards to his career as a teacher, bowling coach and some personal things as well. You might find yourself amused a bit by some of his answers. Its short but sweet. Hope you enjoy!
Congratulations on your victory at Counties. What were your immediate thoughts at the conclusion of the competition? Immediate thoughts, super happy for a great bunch of bowlers who really worked together for this title. But, on the downside, due to state rules, I had to inform 3 of my players that they could not be on the section bus. We had discussed this previously but it now became a reality.
You have announced your retirement. Is that retirement from teaching, coaching or both? How long have you been teaching and how long have you been coaching? Were you always in the Lindenhurst School district? I am retiring from teaching and coaching at the end of this year. What a way to go! I feel sorry for my successor, how do you top this. I have been in Lindenhurst for the last 34 years, and coaching since 1991.
You were quoted in Newsday the day after counties saying "I couldn't have asked for a better group of individuals" to go out (retire) with. Were you overstating that a bit or was your statement genuine and from the heart? It was certainly from the heart. This was the most talented team I have ever had, which resulted in problems of playing time. However, they understood what a team was and what I was trying to do. They were unselfish to a man. If I was in their position, I don't know if I could have shown that much class. No matter who was in the matches, they pulled for each other and that was what put us over the top. Down the stretch, most of my second string did not finish their games, they were more interested in the Varsity match. And in addition to all of this, I HAD THE GREATEST BUNCH OF PARENTS that I could ever had hoped for. This part of the quote Newsday left out.
Any possibility that you will still coach the team in 2006-07 and beyond? I am willing to help my successor in anyway I can but he is going to establish HIS TEAM. Next year I hope to be able to watch them for the enjoyment and without that internal stress. I may look composed on the outside but inside things are churning. No more gum chewing!
You have to have a team comedian. Every team seems to have one. Who keeps the team loose when things aren't going so well? Team comedian? I don't know but Kyle Markowitz always made things interesting, He was hurt for most of the season but never missed a match and a chance to add some kind of comment. It was also great to have a lefty of his talent and rested coming down the stretch.
Prior to the season starting, did you feel that your team could contend for a county championship? What team(s) did you feel were a legitimate threat to win it all? We knew we were good as a team after the run we put on in the counties in the last set last year. However, you never know what will happen. In 1999, my team was the first in the county to shoot 1200 and average over 1000 per game and I think we were 6th or 7th that year. As far as tough teams, just look at League One, anybody want in? East Islip is always going to be a threat, especially the way they started and Bayshore was defending champions with most of his starters returning. We do not get to see alot of teams outside our league but believe me each coach is watching on A2Z. All past rivals at counties, Floyd, Longwood, Northport, Commack and any team finishing first in their league you have to assume is going to be tough. But in the end, you have to post the number.
One of the great attributes that you bring to the table as a coach is that you get all your bowlers involved during the year. Just how important is that to you as a coach? I want them to be a team feeling that everyone is part of this "thing" we are creating. Most players know their "role" on the team. My team knew that Greene and Williams were always going to be in the lineup but were never sure who the other 3 were going to be. This year that helped. It was great to be able go get all of them in this year, even though it took until the last game. The best part is when called on, they all performed to the best of their ability. What more can you expect?
Do you still keep in contact with some of your past student/bowlers? If anyone was at the counties, just about every player from the 2001 county championship team was there rooting on Lindy. I feel I have a great relationship with the majority of my players and we run into each other during the year. When I was actively bowling, I could not wait until some of them graduated and became my teammates in leagues. We always did well and it paid off for all of us.
Share with us a humorous moment that has transpired over the years with on of your bowling teams. There must be one story that is etched into your mind that you wont ever forget. Can't think of a real good one but I will always remember are the bus rides home from Northport after the team hit Taco Bell!
Lindenhurst will be competing at the State Bowling Championship in Syracuse on March 4, 2006. How is practice coming along and how confident does your team seem to be these days? This team now is sky high! If they get the conditions, especially on the left side, they could take it all.
Lets learn a few things about Bob Slowey shall we? OK
What do you do in your spare time away from the classroom and away from the lanes? Is there any free time? Ok, summer, my wife and I enjoy golf. Free time other than that I spend a lot of time "playing the market" , playing guitar and keyboards, all old stuff, and that occasional trip to AC or LV.
Three guests you would like to share an evening with dinner wise? Guest for dinner? Don't know but I been quoted as my ideal foursome for golf would be John Candy, Howard Stern and AL Bundy. You figure this one out.
Favorite Book? Book, Math people do not read for enjoyment. I use books as a source of information and devour them to obtain what I need. Last book read for enjoyment, Private Parts
Favorite Movie? Here's an odd combination, original King Kong and Smokey and the Bandit. Real high brow stuff.
Favorite Musical Group? Since I was 14, the Stones. And a little known band the Hassles
Favorite Actress? Marg Helgenberger from CSI. Met her in LV
Favorite Actor? Cannot go wrong with anything by Robert DeNiro
Favorite Food? Give me a platter of Ribs!
Pet Peeve? Incompetence, especially when it effects me personally!
Finally, What is It you would like for people to remember about you years from now as a teacher and as a coach? To be respected and fair. This is simple and straight to the point. Knowing that I cared about each and every one of my players.
